Re: First net of the year

First net's this thursday- same as every year I've got some new batting and bowling methods to try out which are going to help me turn that elusive corner.

Last year I banged one in against our gobsh*te wicketkeeper in the nets and hit him flush on the chest as he tried to flinch out of the way. Remembering the startled look on his face that was probably more satisfying than anything that happened during the course of the real seaon (except of course my Homeric 43 over 8 not out).

I've trained with a few clubs and the last one I trained with at Sophia Gardens were extremely cliquey. For a bunch of middle aged men, it was pretty sad to see it still happening.

As in, if you were good we'd accept you into our "clique" and if you weren't you'd struggled to feel involved. This is what bothered me slightly.

Might get the odd game for a pub side, although they might just throw a sheet over me and use me for a sightscreen if I don't lose some weight.

You get good people, you get bad people. Good people are better. Keep looking.

I was piss poor too - but I still played lots. You just have to find a comp that it is as crap as you.

This is exactly what you have to do Smerk. You have to find a team full of borderline spastics who can barely stand up, let alone play cricket. Even if the other teams are better than you, at least you're the star player. Just in case you're feeling down about your ability, this is what I'm planning to do.

Because, I have zero leg side play, and less footwork than Tresco. For the first 2 hours of the net with my mates, I could barely get the ball to go in the net from a distance of 8 yards - I kept pinging it over the top and once it even went into the other net next to ours (luckily it was empty). I eventually realised what I was doing wrong - trying to bowl with my body still vertical, not getting the head and chest over to the left. I was getting out-bowled by my mate who doesn't even like cricket!

I think I have sorted it now - that's what winter does, I suppose.

Christ, even I can get it in the net, and I'm the worst bowler in the world! Laughing

Do you live in the London area and fancy a game by any chance?

Yeah, it was funny for an hour or so, and then it did become a bit irritating.

At the start, it was just me and my mate. It must have been really boring for him, just standing about padded up, holding a bat, watching the ball continuously fail to get anywhere near him and having to tap it off the top of the net. If it was a good bowl, he could pick it out the sides and roll it back.

The best thing is, he had to go just before I sorted it out Laughing

Short of players this year? The story of many a club up and down the country. So many people could get a game if they put themselves forward....

We're very lucky, we're doing well. We added a 3rd XI a couple of years ago, they're now playing league cricket and we've gained a second ground for them to have as a home. So the playing "staff" has increased to about 50. We've just signed our overseas player for this season, and if his record is anything to go by, he seems fairly useful. It's not often you get Otis Gibson to provide the reference.... Shocked

Unfortunately not, live in Bucks. And I don't drive.

Your team needs someone who can stand up properly then?

Clammers - there are several clubs in south Bucks who are keen on new intakes ...
need them, in fact ... forget the big ones like Marlow, Wycombe and Beaconsfield ... try the smaller friendlier clubs - and if you like, I'll PM you a list of them.
If you live around the south Bucks area that is!

If you're looking for a club near you, perhaps the best way is to look on the ECB's Play Cricket website, which allows you to do a search. Many of the clubs put info on their mini-site anyway, which is useful:

Yeah I think Wycombe is a lot out of my league. Their ground is sweet though.

Please do send me a list.
