Rugby World Cup 2011: The Odds

Post by DJ_Smerk on Sun 12 Sep 2010, 11:54

Never quite sure about the odds of teams in sport - JGK will surely know more - but here are the odds for the pool stages in the RWC 2011 in New Zealand.

Rugby World Cup Pool A Outrights

Winner
New Zealand (1/5), France (9/2), Tonga (150), Canada (200), Any Other (250), Japan (250)

Rugby World Cup Pool B Outrights

Winner
England (8/13), Argentina (7/2), Scotland (4), Any Other (150), Romania (150), Georgia (250)

Rugby World Cup Pool C Outrights

Winner
Australia (1/3), Ireland (11/4), Italy (50), Any Other (200), USA (250), Russia (1000)

Rugby World Cup Pool D Outrights

Winner
South Africa (2/7), Wales (10/3), Any Other (40), Samoa (50), Fiji (66), Namibia (500)

10/3 - I have a sinking feeling that we won't make it out of the group stage. With the Saffers and two bogey sides combined with our lack of greatness in this competition, it won't be pretty. The only champagne we'll be tasting is sparkling wine in economy on the Quantas flight home.

I doubt these odds will change much, even if we win the Six Nations, the Autumn Internationals and our summer tour.

We just never step it up against the big three.

How are Japan coming on in the World Rugby? Have they made leaps and bounds since the days of 100-0 drubbings?

As long as the Frenchies don't win.

I don't mind France, the Argies & Ireland from that lot.

France has a knack of overturning the All Blacks.

It'll be typical WC New Zealand if they fall short again.

Of course it's likely that the winner of that game will win the pool. One team listed at 1/5 presents a tasty opportunity (don't tell anyone from south asia)

What a performance that was, we haven't seen anything like that from England since before the World Cup win... it wasn't that the Wobblies were that bad, other than missing a few kicks early on that could have settled them into a lead, just that England were inspired from 1-15, or 1-22 even if they used them all!

Youngs was inspired and ran the game, Ashton looks like the cutting-edge winger we haven't had for years, the second row forwards were immense and Flood at last looked an international number 10, as well as kicking his goals near faultlessly. Quick ball and ambition, which we haven't seen since we had the likes of Dawson, Greenwood and Robinson in the side. The team was going nowhere earlier this year, now we need to build on this, beat the Yarps and carry the form into next year, then the team might peak for the World Cup like we have done in recent times.

On a cricketing theme I noticed there was a Kurtley and a Courtney on the field, though on different sides on this occasion!

Yeah, the same number as the All Blacks who piss on every other team for the three years in between then find a way to mess it up when it matters. England have generally been awful for the last 7 years, other than putting that run together to somehow make the final in 2007 and being one marginal line call away from retaining it...

And one more win that the All Blacks in the fully professional era, which is hella funny.

They're at home next year as well, so even more pressure and more likely they will f**k it up... first half-decent side they play probably.

With England's new charcoal grey away kit, maybe they should be known as the "Almost Blacks"...

Most successful team of the last decade in world cups. I think that counts as peaking at recent times.

I don't know why England don't try and play like that all the time. They threw the ball around and ran with it in Sydney five months ago as well and got a victory against the Aussies, and again here.

I'm happy with the marginal improvement against the Saffers.

A good match.

So, how much is a moral victory worth in Rugby Union?
