OK. It's just that it's so taken for granted here many don't even stop to think about it.

The first reason is social cohesion. Statistically, about half the people in society are male and the other half are female. If one man takes more than his fair share it leaves other males with no spouse. If you have enough sexually frustrated males with no spouse it is a recipe for trouble.

The second reason is equality between the sexes. Througout the ages polygny (one man, many wives) has been quite common, while polyandry (one woman, many husbands) has been very rare. Unforunately polygny has a tendancy to see women treated like the property of the man, rather than an equal partner. That's not to say monogamous societies haven't treated women like property in the past, but it hasn't been to the same extent, and I would argue that the lack of polygny in Western societies has helped women in their struggle for freedom.

When polygny is accepted and institutionalised (whether by a state or a religious group) it reinforces a pseudo-feudal structure in which the male is at the top. Males frequently abuse their power in such situations, using social pressure and/or the threat of violence to coerce women into their polygamous relationships (often when these women are young and vulnerable).

Women are no longer treated as equal partners, but just one of many.

It's also worth noting the importance of property rights in Western society. A man and his wife have a 50/50 share in the property. They are equal partners. It is not just men who own property these days but women - and each woman has just as much of a claim on the place as her husband.

This isn't to say polyamory can't work. I know from experience that it can (at least for a time). But institutionalising it comes with great risks which lead to inequality between the sexes and inequality between men themselves.

One person, one spouse is a rule that helps foster equality and social cohesion - two key values of the West.

I am not too convinced Hass

Why are Tiger Woods's actions NOT considered illegal yet it is illegal for a man to marry another a valid permission from his wife? surely Tiger's actions are far more insulting to women.

Secondly what if a woman cant get pregnant? what is the man suppose to do then? end the relationship?

Marriage law in Florida

Previous Marriages:
If you have been previously married, the date of your divorce or date of your spouse's death must be supplied. If the divorce or spouse's death occurred within the past 30 days, a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate is required.

No and i don't really agree with it. A woman should be allowed to have a second husband as long as the first one agrees.

Quite a few muslim countries including Pakistan are not known for their freedom and they TRY to go strictly by the book(Quran) yet countries in the west bolster about about freedom all the time which makes this particular law very strange.

It also goes back to Adam and Eve, pp.

Unless you were Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, etc.

And has been an attempt to temper excessive alpha-machoism, as Hass implies.
