Re: Glossary Update
There's also one that comes up from time, that seems to mean "not to be considered for the national team ever EVER again".
Can't remember the abbreve, tho.

Re: Glossary Update
Doesn't "choke" also merit special mention? It's invoked ad nauseam ...

Re: Glossary Update
Hello PeterCS
Thank you for your suggestions. I will include them and consider the point on removing references to long non-active players.
Please note that GAF and its derivatives gets a mention under DILLIGAF.

Fromage

Re: Glossary Update
PeterCS wrote:Just a thought .... could the glossary be lightened by cutting references to players off the international scene (or never on it) for the past decade or more?
Past international captains might be the exception, as they are still occasionally in currency.
Why?
Maybe we could shorten dictionaries by removing seldom used words.

Re: Glossary Update
I agree, taips. All the historical nicknames and references have relevance and have played a part in the development of the character of this and various other forums.
Leave 'em in, I say.

It's not like the glossary is that long.

Re: Glossary Update
Indeed. I have a chuckle at some of the formerly used stuff. It adds context to the joint.

Re: Glossary Update
Here's an idea. Lets delete all threads over a month old as they have no relevance. Particular that never ending Eng/Aus thread.

Re: Glossary Update
Hello taipan
I have considered PeterCS's suggestion but agree with yourself and skully that the older entries still have merit, and as such I will be leaving them in the Glossary for now.

Re: Glossary Update
I'm happy to go with the majority view on the "archaic" items - as my points were exactly what were asked for: constructive suggestions for the common wealth.
I would just add.though that the Glossary was originally a Glossary, not a dictionary of all outre' terms ever used here. The difference: the stated original purpose of the Glossary was to help anyone who might have difficulty following particular often-used acronyms, common nicknames, private codes, censorship-circumventing euphemisms etc.being used in current FB discussions to understand these, thus not be excluded from our cricketing version of thieves' cant.
A dictionary is something else. More general and more comprehensive, for a start.
So taipan's point about why not then abridge a dictionary? is more sardonic/polemical than relevant here, I think.
Of course, if what we now want is an ongoing Bierce-style Devil's Dictionary of cricket, we could all keep chipping in with our own little witticisms
