Smart Blonde v. Dumb Blonde on Fox News

Post by Allan D on Tue 13 Jul 2010, 08:52

Saw this on FNC today. Wonderful. Can't imagine Martha Kearney and Polly Toynbee getting down and dirty like this. Note the 'fly-trap' mouth on Kirstin Powers:

Is that why you called one of them a dumb blonde?

It would be an improvement on the BBC-lite it is now with its obsession with man-made global warming and uncritical attitude towards Hamas presented by the smarmy ex-BBC Jeremy Thompson and the excruciatingly awful Kay ("I'm a Lassie from Lanc-a-sheer") Burley. At least FNC is interesting and entertaining to watch, even if you don't share its politics, as shown by the clip above.

Sky is simply a stop for those, like Thompson, who have left the BBC and whose careers are slowly winding down or those whose careers are on the way up and are seeking to join the BBC. Either way those with right-of-centre views are notable by their absence. Murdoch isn't interested because, unlike FNC. subscribers do not have to pay for it as it comes part of the Sky package and is included in Freeview.

If either subscribers were made to pay for Sky News just as Murdoch has now made The Times and Sunday Times websites into paysites (in which case few would watch it) or the forcible collection of subscriptions to the BBC through the licence-fee were ended due to the digital changeover (when, like Sky, those who didn't pay simply had the service switched off rather than being dragged through the courts) then things might change but not until then. In the meantime I prefer the occasional (surprising) catfight on FNC with my late afternoon tea and crumpets but, as our German friends might say, chacun a son gout.

Trained on the Cambridge Evening News, moved on to BBC Radio Sheffield, then BBC TV's Look North in Leeds

1977 Appointed first BBC TV News North of England correspondent

1982 Moved to ITN as its chief sports correspondent

1987 Set up and ran new ITN Asia bureau based in Hong Kong

1990-91 Covered the first Gulf War and start of the war in the Balkans

1991 Appointed ITN Africa correspondent based in Johannesburg

1993 Moved to Sky News as its chief Africa correspondent

1995 Set up and headed new Sky News US bureau in Washington DC

1998 Returned to London to present Sky News evening programmes

Jeremy Thompson - My Life in Media

Not strictly correct but you're right that he made his name nationally on ITN, now largely defunct, as the independent TV companies are too cash-strapped to support it.
