1,000 first class runs by the end of May

Post by Basil on Thu 27 May 2010, 09:47

Last achieved by Hicky in 1988 - Adam Lyth has a decent chance of achieving the milestone: he needs to score 147 runs in the Roses match by the close of play on Monday.

Ah, the much maligned Graeme Hick. How good could he have been but for the size of his heart?

And how would he have gone at T20?

He did play T20 domestically - trust me, he was a bit good at it!

If he could have played all his test cricket at Worcester, he would probably have ended up with 12,000 test runs.

Well, he was a bit good at all thing County Cricket, wasn't he? Just a shame he didn''t convert the obvious ability into international runs.

Not sure where he went wrong - more of a temperament issue than a technical one I think as I've seen him collar some of the best fast bowlers on occasions at New Road.

Yeah, definitely temperament. Who can ever forget Merv Hughes literally scaring him out with bouncer after bouncer at Lords in 1993? In the end he flashed at a wide one to be caught behind - from about square leg. It was quite sad really, and Merv was almost sheepish about it.

Actually, now that I think about it, he actually gave Hick a massive spray as he ran past him at Lords. The sheepish one was when Hick slapped a wide half-tracker straight to Border at point in the 1st Test at Old Trafford in 93.

Lara must have been close in his 501 season.

He didn't score his 501 until after 31 May. Doing 1,000 by 31/5 between Hicky's year and now has been all but impossible because of the relatively few championship matches played. This year might be a one off, particularly if the Championship format is revamped.

It's going to be a hard ask for Lyth now, yesterday was a washout and Lancs are batting first.
