I think we've covered the early rumour about this one but it's now official. The dude lied on the back of Bannie hysteria.

I thought it was an effigy of Ricky Ponting

"An Indian man who stoked concerns about racist attacks by claiming he was set alight has been given a suspended jail term after admitting he lied to police.

Jaspreet Singh, 28, told police he was doused with petrol and set alight by assailants after he parked his car near his Essendon home about 2.30am on January 9 this year.

But police later found he had suffered the burns while trying to torch his Ford sedan to claim $11,000 in insurance."

But this bit... 'Singh, who was in Australia on a spousal visa to accompany his wife while she studied, was also sending money to his parents in India who were caring for their five-year-old son.' is just pissweak. Guys and girls, here's a newsflash: If you have kids, you take care of them yourself, you don't piss off to some other country and leave them to someone else to look after. That's just pathetic.

What was annoying about all this was the racist hysteria surrounding this incident and later the murder of the three year old boy which had featured Indian nationals on the news deriding Aussie racism.

The minute it was found that the perpetrators were Indian the incidents fell totally off the news radar.
