Err, at war memorial services, no, we don't. I think it's something to do with insecurity and an over-eagerness to show the world that Australia is now its own country that has come a long way in the last 50 years that Australians feel the need to show how Australian they are at every opportunity.

Like most Australians I find the commercialisation of ANZAC Day off-putting. But I feel a growing minority are using some of the excesses of ANZAC Day to attack the whole shebang.
ANZAC Day is a very important day in the cultures of Australia and New Zealand. I believe the revival of ANZAC Day over the past three decades has been a sign of our maturity.
At dawn services around the country the overwhelming feeling is one of respect. The services are sombre affairs, which give us a chance to reflect on war and its effects. Rememberance Day also offers us a chance to reflect, but that is a universal day. ANZAC Day puts war in an Australasian context - it helps us understand our history. It is also important that our war veterans know they are respected.
The fact the day descends into debauchery by dusk is just as it should be. We are not a puritan people. I like my funerals to be sombre affairs, but I like my wakes to be wild.
Long live ANZAC Day Lest We Forget.

Re: ANZAC Day
Bump.
Am toying with taking BabyKv1 to the Dawn Service in Martin Place. Means I will have to wake up at 3.30 though so I'll probably skip it.
Might try to see the parade though.

Re: ANZAC Day
This morning, I made the effort, got up early, and then... watched the cricket.
One of my co-workers on their way out the door yesterday said 'have a happy ANZAC day'... I decided upon hearing that to just give up on the day this year.
