Phurt ....
The only thing "dodgy" about Steve Finn is the fact that Skully's uttering the words and laying the sour seeds ahead of Ashes 10/11 ...

Steve Finn making his debut - I distinctly recall you saying he had a dodgy action when you saw him in an U19 world cup or some tournament. The memory is going old chap Wink

Boycott carried his bat for 99 (I think the only occasion in Test cricket) at Perth in the 1st Test in December 1979. He claims the offending player was Underwood although the scorecard states it was Willis who was caught at slip off Dymock. The last 3 wickets fell for four runs after Boycott and Taylor had put on 41 for the 7th wicket and he and Dilley had put on 29 for the 8th wicket. In the next Test at the SCG Gower made 98* and in the final Test at the MCG Gooch was run out for 99. In the 3rd Test between Pakistan and England at Karachi in March 1973 Majid Khan and Mushtaq Mohammed were both dismissed for 99 (Mushtaq was run out) in Pakistan's 1st innings and Dennis Amiss was dismissed for 99 in England's response.

Cook has emulated Greg Chappell and Andrew Strauss in scoring a century on both his Test debut and his captaincy debut. While Cook has the England record for the highest score on captaincy debut (beating Strauss' 128) does anyone know the overall HS for a captain on debut as I am having difficulty finding it? 26 Test captains (including Cook) have achieved this feat, I think.

Also scored a ton in his last ever test innings.

Yes, and last one as captain, presumably, so holds the record for scoring a century in both his first and last innings as both player and captain. Chappell is also unique in scoring centuries in both innings of his first Test as captain v. the Windies at the 'Gabba in November/December 1975.

Boycott is the only player to carry his bat for 99*. The only other Test opener to carry his bat for a score in the nineties is Mike Atherton who made 94* before Phil Tufnell was dismissed for (a creditable) 13 v. NZ at Christchurch in February 1997. However, in England's second innings, the fourth of the match, Atherton made 118 after England had been set 305 to win which they achieved with 4 wickets to spare.

HS by an England captain abroad - 205 by Len Hutton at Sabina Park, March/April 1954 (Gary Sobers' debut match) and by Ted Dexter at Karachi, February 1962.

Sky reckons that this wicket gets easier and easier to bat on. I suppose the Bangles though that if they could get us out for 250 that might be their best chance of competing.

Saw a few highlights.

Carberry - tonked the seamers and then looked all at seas against spin.

Think I called 'hard hands' ages ago. Go me.

Looked alright, if he's good against pace, that first Test in Brisbane should be right up his alley.

I too was pleased to awaken to a respectable score.

Although F knows why we went in with 6 batsmen. Still, if the only other option is Tredwell...

The selectors probably worked out that taking a 6fer against Bangles A is probably the equivalent of taking 1/80 against Derbyshire seconds on the beach at Blackpool.

Yes, that's pretty much what I meant.

Have said this before, as have others, but what's the point in having two specialist offies?

I know some of you don't rate Rashid so highly, but I think he is pretty good. Good enough for Bangladesh anyway - not exactly a tough side to début against, although I suppose it wouldn't tell us much.

I think he's a good player. Little surprised he struggled against the spin - he really came to prominence by scoring a shit-load of runs for the Lions on the subcontinent (in India, IIRC), so perhaps we can put it down to first Test nerves.

Having said that, most blokes that come out of county cricket into the England side seem to have a pretty limited game against spin at first and have to quickly learn on the job. Strauss and Cook are two that immediately spring to mind.
