Allan D,

Perhaps there are other reasons for Armfield's honour? For example, Doug Insole received a CBE for his services to cricket - might have seemed rather a high honour compared to others who contributed similarly, until you discover that he was also engaged in work at Bletchley Park, a fact which only emerged more recently.

Armfield was 9 when the war ended so I don't think he was at Bletchley Park unless his mum took him there. He was included in the 1966 World Cup squad but missed out through injury and was runner-up to Bobby Charlton that year as the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year. Still got his World Cup Winners' medal though, but only this year from Gordon Brown:
