Why does he always look so ordinary against England, but a world beater against everyone else?

the boring body language of the english players ?

I have not seen much of Steyn, but isn't he the kind of bowler who relies a bit on swing w/pace.

possibly the English players are used to swing in their cloudy home conditions and counter him with deft pre-emptory footwork.

Also Steyn doesn't perform equally on all surfaces. On flat pitches he is also very ordinary.

No. Getting straight onto the front foot means that you commit too early and can't adjust when the ball swings. Check out Matthew Hayden's record in England.

you're right, I got the terms mixed up.

playing on front foot is the wrong technique, because that's how the Injuns used to play the first match in England before they saw the error of their ways. Esp if they didn't get any practice matches.

Not if you plant your front foot it isn't. It's very straightforward, if the ball swings, whether early or late, you move late as a batsman. And you said swing, so you can backtrack all you like, but you still said it. As someone who has to fight very hard to delay my movements against the swinging ball, I know this all too well.

There hasn't been much swing on offer here because of the huge wind which came in from the south coast yesterday. It negated all swing though there was some on day one, especially in the first session. He's also just returning from injury but his record against England is an anomaly, though he troubled Vaughan considerably.

He's scared of Ian Bell is what he is.

Dunno - perhaps he has not been fully fit when playing us. Kallis has a weak bowling record against England too, especially in SA. Odd, with us having so many world beating batters and all....

Overall I think we are their bogey team. They should duff us up regularly, but since SA's readmission it has been roughly even-stevens between the two sides.
