And when has union ever really been a running game?
Many international wingers would have a thing or two to say about that...

JGK wrote:The most interesting period of the Aust v England match was the last 15 minutes when Aust scored and then England had to throw it around because drop goals weren't going to get them there.
Which begs the question why the rules don't encourage the whole game to be played like that.
That brings into question the whole, "Work to your strengths" consensus. England's strength lies in Jonny's boot. Why not exploit it?

Smerky I have watching union for many years. In all that time the game has always been won up front.
In fact I remember that when S14 started and the ball was being run all over the place that the NH sides sneered at it as being powderpuff rugby

I see what you mean. I suppose if you don't win those clinical scrums, you don't win momentum and therefore don't setup your backs for the final push. I'm not sure about you, but I always enjoy it when a forward scores a try after running a fair distance. They sort of end up doing both jobs.

Haven't seen much of the ABs game at Cardiff but from glimpses the better team won.
Australia should be improved after the training run against the England thirds. They will need to better in their next match

So cheating, high-tackling, handling in ruck is the ideals of a better team? Wow, glad we lost then...

Hence my earlier comment about the how poor Union is compared to League.

The 1984 GS.
Though to be fair when I first started playing the game you could take a place kick from a mark, and my coach at the time said the perfect Rugby play was a rolling maul that took a half hour to move thirty metres and ended up with a score and life threteaning injuries to everyone involved.

What's all this about 25% of the players in Rugby premier league being injured at the moment? Bonkers sport.
Even more so when the Aussies win.

New Zealand is the only example I can really think of, of a team who pushes the rules to breaking point. Also, the fact the referee's are too scared to even give a decision against the All Blacks is disgusting.

And one more point, the fact that Dan Carter got frustrated when interviewed about the high tackle shows the arrogance of a majority of the Kiwi players.
Let's hope he gets a match ban or something, although I doubt the IRB will have the balls to slap him with a ban.

Not really Braddles, you still had to win the ball to run it.
If you go back far enough a try scored nothing and only the conversation counted.
The myth of rugby ever being a running game, is just that, a myth.
Something akin to fair play in cricket.
