That's an interesting view, vilks. In what way would your family being better off mean they were "shitting on others less fortunate" ?

Please don't make the mistake of thinking everyone with right wing views has some kind of character flaw. When it comes to shitting on others less fortunate, the current crop of government ministers voted year on year for 20+% pay & pension increases while holding the remainder of PS workers to single figure inflation rises. Slate the Tories by all means - but don't believe that socialists can't be just as greedy and venal once they get their feet in the trough.

I find it highly amusing to read some of the myopic crap on here from those with seemingly seriously large swathes of oak trees lying yoke-like, across their shoulders...

Basically - if you vote Tory, you must be a toff and sh!t all over the working classes ... The End ....... F.F.S. Rolling Eyes
How f**king narrow minded and petty is that ...?

As Growls points out above - WhoTF was it that raped this country rigid these past 13 years with lies, mismanagement and sheer malpractice - and remind us again of THEIR background? Other than Our Tone (Fetters) the rest of the NuLabour pigs with snouts deep in the trough and sh!tting all over their own (bigoted Mrs Duffy included) working class fellow humans were NOT toffs and the end product of a state education of which they claim to be proud !
Ironic isn't it?!
I mix within a large group of friends who have mixed backgrounds, hailing from grammar , public and comprehensive schools, terraced houses, high rise apartments and estates in leafy suburbs ... and frankly, I'd wager they'd all PTSL if they read some of the crap written on here....

Emu -
I know all too well what the priviliged classes are like. Arrogant and without social conscience.

You KNOW .... !! And how's that ... a straw poll amongst a half dozen of your fellow PS mates ? Do tell !
Like you, I too came from a privileged background - colonial background, public school, Navy, the whole sh!tfest .... yet I carried Mao's little red book for several years, dined with Guevara (in Cuba at a cigar factory) hanging onto his every word for years later, and then marched with the miners, a true card carrying socialist ... I was always taught to avoid arrogance, to respect your fellow man and to work towards the general benefit of all.
However, somewhere along the line I became disillusioned, grew up and discovered Conservatism, having become disgruntled at the pseudo socialism that stood only for self-furtherance regardless of price or any concern for others.

For the record therefore, us Tories ain't all toffs and contrary to popular belief on here, we dont all p!ss on the working classes, having all been workers ourselves!

Your abhorance of Etonians is however, quite amusing - and it prompts the question ... Were you ever ... nah, .... never mind!

YouGov/Sun instant poll gives it to Cameron, as they have with the other two debates.

I thought Cameron was pretty good to be fair.

And Clegg - what the fark is a vice-chancellor? He was pretty repetitive tonight.

My background could hardly be more different. My father was a stockman on a large dairy farm, working 70+ hour weeks. Two weeks holiday, every tuesday off and one weekend off in three, earning less than £10/week. Living in a tied farm cottage, his dream was to buy his own property. He died when I was 17, and although he saved money from his meagre pay, he never managed to get the deposit required in those days to secure a mortgage.

My grammar school education meant I wasn't forced to follow in his footsteps - I was able to become an aero engineer, earning as much in a month as he would have in six. That same grammar school education meant many of todays lawyers, doctors, senior managers and the like did not have to follow dad & grandad down the pit / into the shipyard / mill / works, to know only school & work before keeling over from some nasty industrial disease or spemding a few years in retirement crippled by arthritis.

Who did away with them ? Dogmatic socialists who'd had that very education, who then "pulled up the drawbridge". If we still had them, countless thousands of bright kids on sink eststes with single mums doing their best would have had an escape route. As it is, they'll mostly grow up married to the state, dependant on benefits for generations. Now, before anyone jumps in about Secondary Moderns "writing less bright children off", please answer this ........ if the professions were educated at grammars, where did the artesans, craftsmen, tradesmen and skilled workers in industrys of every description learn to read, write and do the sums needed to perform their work ? Many comprehensives today are turning out young adults with joke pieces of paper they call qualifications, some of whom I wouldn't allow to shovel shit from one pile to another without 100% supervision.

It's bad enough that their future has been wrecked through a social engineering experiment that's demonstrably failed on every level. The real sadness is that three generations have been f***ed by the system, and they don't even realise it. I could weep for them sometimes .......

Like you, I too came from a privileged background - colonial background, public school, Navy, the whole sh!tfest

I am confused by your use of the words "therefore" and "us Tories" in connection with your earlier statement that you come from a privileged background. You come from a privileged background and have declared your intention to vote Conservative, "therefore" not all Tories are toffs? Huh? Surely all you've done is increased the "toff Tory" sample size by one?

Rachel if I may perhaps answer for Merls - I hope he won't mind, and correct me if I'm wrong.

I read it as - in spite of his privelaged background, young merlin was an idealist who took up the cause of socialism, later to reject it on the basis of so many people espousing egalitarianism while taking advantage of positions of power they found themselves in .......... and is therefore saying that it's *not* simply his privelaged youth driving his beliefs today. Does that make sense ?

nulabor's greatest failing was allowing the toffs to run the banks unfettered by regulation...the free market experiments have failed england...electing these same toffs to run england and its poor northern and western colonies will not help matters

Nothing to be confused about!

Growler ( thanks Growls ) explains it succinctly in his post above - a privileged birth and early life; wholly embraced socialism through my formative years and deep into my 20's; became thoroughly disillusioned with the "self - self - self" syndrome and the "destroy and disrupt regardless of consequence" culture that developed in the name of Socialism at that time as the Unions took control - and which still thrives under NuLabour today BTW - dallied with the Libs for awhile (who never convinced) before converting to Conservatism - and whilst loathing Heath, I adopted Thatcher and her policies which focused primarily on family values, encouraging self belief and the reinstatement of pride in one's Nation whilst gradually clawing itself out of deep debt and an unhealthy dependency on the IMF. Her constructive dismantling of the Unions' powers (Unions to which I once belonged, fully paid-up and marched for) was, IMO, the most sensible and courageous act from a post war PM/Government which went a long way towards the rebuilding of this country following all those winters of discontent.
