Do you know anything about a horse called Speed Gifted?
He was originally from over your way (trained by Luca Cumani) but is now in Australia & trained by Lee Freedman. Speed Gifted resumed today at Flemington winning over 1700 metres. He looked very impressive although the opposition wasn't overly strong. He has been attractively handicapped with 51kgs in both our major Cups but would probably need to earn a penalty to be assured of a start.
Today Speed Gifted won the Gp1 Metropolitan at Randwick. He bolted in by 3¼ lengths & had the race won a long way from home. Unfortunately, the race was held on a heavy track as rain poured down in Sydney. Major sporting events should not be held in that place. The Rugby League Grand Final will be played there tomorrow & they will be sloshing around in a quagmire. Sydney - It really is the end of the world.

The Metropolitan should do it.

At this stage, it still looks as though I'll be having a small wager on Speed Gifted in the Melbourne Cup. I reckon they didn't run him in the Caulfield Cup because if he won it, he would have received another penalty. He is supposed to go around in the Cox Plate next weekend but I doubt if he will be suited in that.
Also, I'll probably have a saver on Alcopop. He has been very impressive this spring.

Re: Can Sajid Mahmood win the Cup?
Lee Freedman admitted later that his charge Speed Gifted may have jarred up on the hard ground and a Melbourne Cup start was doubtful unless Flemington received some rain.
It's always raining in Melbourne. Don't let me down. Looks as though I Alcopop might be carrying all of my spare change.
I also noticed that Merlin still hasn't replied to my original question but has posted regularly on the rival Horse Racing Thread.
Lift your game!

From Racing Victoria Limited

.
A total of 42 horses remain in contention for next week’s $5.65m Emirates Melbourne Cup following the closure of third declarations with Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) on Monday.
Master trainer Bart Cummings, who is chasing his 13th Melbourne Cup off the back of wins in the BMW Caulfield Cup and Tatts Cox Plate, is best represented with six horses.
Defending champion Viewed, Roman Emperor and Allez Wonder are all guaranteed starts for Cummings, whilst Think Money, Dandaad and Naval Escort can boost his numbers by winning The Lexus Stakes at Flemington this Saturday.
Stablemates Whobegotyou and Maldivian, Irish mare Profound Beauty, Vision And Power, Red Lord and Ready To Lift were the high profile withdrawals, but none were unexpected.
Imported stayers Speed Gifted (Lee Freedman) and Changingoftheguard (David Hayes) were both paid up for, as was the Luca Cumani-trained Cima De Triomphe who needs a top three finish in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington this Saturday to pass the ballot clause.
Following the closure of declarations, an updated elimination order has been prepared by RVL for the 3200m handicap which will be run at Flemington on Tuesday, 3 November.
The highest profile runner currently outside the final field of 24 is Caulfield Cup placegetter Vigor who sits at 29th in the order of entry.
Immediately before him in 28 is the Luca Cumani-trained Basaltico, whilst last start centrebet.com Geelong Cup winner Leica Ding is on the cusp of a start in 26th.
Final declarations will be taken at 5pm this Saturday, 31 October before the barrier draw is conducted in the Committee Room at Flemington at 6.30pm.

Re: Can Sajid Mahmood win the Cup?
Sajid won't be winning the Cup this year. Poor fella!
I reckon it's between Alcopop, Shocking & Viewed for first & I'm also gunna throw in Roman Emperor, Daffodil & Leica Ding for the minor placings in trifectas & first fours.
Hope they go better than my two good things last Saturday. Shamoline Warrior was scratched in the morning & Zipping was withdrawn at the barrier.
