Stumpy also - since jacking it in in about 1984 Bruce had disappeared into the mulga.
Ironic that the only member of that 'not-so-fab-4' (though Laird was under-rated and uinlucky) NOT to be quoted was former professional dial-a-gob Graeme Wood.

Viv Richards once told Laird (after a WSC ton against the WI):
Man, I wish I could bat like that.

Re: Australian State Cricket - 09-10 season
Just looked up Laird's last first-class season, in 83-84 when Oz was about tgo play 10 Tests home and away v the Windies. He made over 700 runs at 44 with eight 50s and no tons, mostly batting at no 6 FFS with the aforementioned Mr Wood sharing opening duties with brother-in-law Mike Valetta and the ill-fated Shane Clements.
Dunno at what moment after that season he announced his retirement, but as Wessels, Wood and Steve Smith all struggled to keep their hands out of Holding Garner and co's way, AB desperately needed another guy aqt the top of the order besides himself who had both the guts and the technique to stay in - and Laird had to be more likely a possibility than anybody who was there.

suspect he's been told to toss it in ...yes it is a great day for Australian Cricket...the only blot is that Bung's injury is also good news for NSW

The best part about Tassie turning the Dubber 'Big Guns' into 'Pop Guns' was listening to M Waugh having to acknowledge that NSW were outplayed, albeit through clenched teeth.

Ha ha ha, the FRV won't be playing in the Shield match v the Wozzies...
Still, the Vomits will win by an innings.
Hodge out for Vics, White in doubt

wow...the fetid breath of air from the west returns!!
should be a good game...aside from a little brazen and ginga- the vics are fielding a team of no names - ronald and big mac don't count.
Expect a fantastic match...the mcg pitch is full of life and will offer both batsmen and bowlers plenty of help...
expect nil selectors to be in attendance at the G ... they have no interest in promising young players from the west nor the honest, but effective Vix players... they will all be in Sydney consoling themselves in Oxford St after the tozzies towel up the spivs - AGAIN

And he looked sh!t in that failure as well. Technically not up to it.
Once his eyes and hands reach 25, he'll be flat out keeping his Dubber spot.
