Symonds - 'token' or 'li'l Viv'?
Split this into it's own thread...
Cricinfo is drawing comparisons between Symonds and IVA.
Should we revive the long-disused sobriquet Li'l Viv for him?

Hell no.
For a start he makes Viv look like a midget.
Roy suits him.

In his book he said his schoolmates started it in Charters Towers.
Something to do with a footballer of the time.

No, it was a basketballer in Brisbane, Leroy Loggins who was a black American import who became a naturalised Australian and was known for his laid back attitude.

so all his nicknames have some reference to his black heritage? no wonder he seems to be particularly sensitive about it

I don't see harm in it if the connotation is not negative.

well maybe most people would like to be considered as individuals themselves and not just identified with their skin colour. do most aussies see his most recognisable trait as him being black? i guess the rarity of seeing someone of his colour playing cricket for your country leads a bit to it

TO,
By 'particularly sensitive', do you mean shrugging off racist taunts by a massive crowd to win the Man of the Series award and deciding not to report said poor behaviour because he didn't want to make a big thing of it?
Yeah, sounds 'sensitive' to me.
I don't particularly like Sideshow Bob but I can't criticise his personal handling of the problem he has found himself in on this tour.
And because I don't know who the hell is logged on at the moment, I will clarify that this is Rachel, no matter what the username says.

Nicknames usually refer to some respect, often physical, in which the bearer is different from those around him - my brother's black employees refer to him as "the whitey", although they don't realise he understands their language. The One wrote:well maybe most people would like to be considered as individuals themselves and not just identified with their skin colour. do most aussies see his most recognisable trait as him being black? i guess the rarity of seeing someone of his colour playing cricket for your country leads a bit to it

Royce Simmonds was the footballer.
He goes on to mention Leroy as being theorised by others .

Noice Rachel. Agree with all of that.
Thought it sounded a bit angry for Tombo.

Aye, I always thought he was named after the League footballer, in much the same way NLWL was 'Alfie' (after his League namesake) for a while.

If the comparison was to viv Richards, he wishes he was 'Lil Viv'.
