Mark Waugh & Allan Border about Symonds incident

Post by SG on Tue 16 Oct 2007, 17:47

Former Australian cricketers feel all-rounder Andrew Symonds was being 'precious' in alleging that he was subjected to racist chants during the ODI series in India and the issue was being blown out of proportion.

Mark Waugh said just making monkey noises did not amount to racism.
"What is Symonds complaining about - monkey noises?" Waugh told a TV channel. "Does that come down to racism, without actually saying any words? I don't know"

Waugh, who made several India tours, added: I don't know if we are getting a bit precious here, really." Former captain Allan Border also agreed that the crowds always tried to irritate the visiting side. "There has always been taunts from crowds from as long as I can remember", Border said. But the incident has been taken up by FICA and CA.

I can see Aussie headlines like "Allan Border and Mark Waugh have been bought out by BCCI". "Border / Waugh in the race for Indian Coach" etc. brewing.

Seriously, good to see Border put this in perspective. Makes a big change to the whingethon some of the least qualified quys like Ponting have been on.

From what i know while there is always abuse there have never been monkey noises made at any other australian players.

I guess it's just a coincidence that they were made this time to the only black player on the team?

I mean cmon if australian fans make monkey noises towards the west indian team we all know it would be seen as racist abuse.

There are monkeys virtually everywhhere in India, any tourist can tell one that. So not sure where the African connection is made up from. Also Monkeys are reverred as a God (Hanuman from Ramayana) and are protected and worshipped in India.

Perhaps the monkey calls if they were made were directed at some of the antics of Symonds bearing in mind that monkeys have a reputation of being mischevous creatures.
Not so long ago McGrath was pulled up for calling Jayasuriya a Black Monkey and he defended it by saying that it was a dig at Jaya's mannerisms and not something else.

At the rate some of these "reverse" cards are being played it won't be long before Norway points a finger at the Italians for fishing Tuna.

Yeah mate either that or they were making reference to his african background.

Look we had an issue with a few idiots ruining it for everybody when SA was in town.

You guys have racist morons there as well, sticking your head in the sand won't change that fact.

Suspect you'll find he actually denied the accusation completely.

Mate,

In the other thread I have pointed to the "fair and lovely" attitude and the racist behaviour of some Indians towards others. There is a lot of racism in India. No denying that, I have said that several times.

The point here is that a "racist" card is perhaps being played intelligently or ignorantly to mount pressure on the host nation / public.

Bunch of sooks. They should just shut up and get on with it. Symonds brought it on himself.

And is that (Hawaii's denial) sufficient reason to believe he didn't say that?
Or has his version been corroborated by other neutrals?

Nice try ... but read the sentence again and check it's grammatical content.

"He denied the accusation ..."
The accusation of calling SJ a "Black Monkey" was levelled against Hawaii.

By He denying it implies that Hawaii was denying the accusation made against him, (not SJ, against whom the sledge was directed).

So you are now saying that SJ confirmed that Hawaii did not say such a thing, right?
Just trying to get to the facts.

Mahanama made the claim about McGrath in a book .

McGrath and Jayasuriya have both denied it happened .

SG's report of AB and MEW's reactions on Inside Cricket to the Symonds moneky chant incident is accurate. I watched the show but my reaction at the time to AB and MEW was "boys, you two never fielded on the boundary in India".

Still, I think the whole thing has got way out of hand. I think Roy may have been feeling a bit fired up with the ongoing Sree/Harby sledging carp and let the crowd get under his skin. Once you have a whinge, it's only gonna get worse.

It's like the "Hayden abuses kids" and the "Ozzies made train noises to Chris Cairn's" stories ...

Denied by all concerned but still brought up and embellished whenever someone wants to score some cheap points about Ozzie behaviour ...
