Gaddafi

Post by OP Tipping on Wed 4 Mar 2009 - 19:12

In the aftermath of the attack in Lahore, various scribes have referred to the previous incident of terrorism aimed directly at sportsmen: the Munich Massacre in 1972, perpetrated by the Black September Movement.

I haven't seen anyone draw the sadly fitting connection that the Black September Movement was in large part funded by the man after whom the Lahore stadium was renamed some 35 years ago.

It was built in 1959, when Gaddafi was 17, and was called Lahore Stadium.

It was renamed for Gaddafi in 1974, as a reward for his support of Pakistan's nuclear ambitions.

That's just not true. The stadium, in complete form as one of the world's largest seated venues, was finished in 1959

It was refitted for the world cup in the mid-nineties, and Gadaffi had nothing to do with that, either.

Funnily enough, the first team to play versus Pakistan at Lahore Stadium was Australia.

It's funny because it's true.

And it's enough because it's not too much, and not too little, it's just right.
