Benaud finally declares

Post by Guest on Fri 27 Feb 2009, 07:07

Well, the master commentator has does his last stint. He was the voice of summer for me for years and years. Him and Johnners.

My favourite bit of his commentary was in this situation: England have scored a mountain of runs and Australia are fighting to stay in the match. Botham has just put two men back for the hook. He bowls a short fast one at Andy Hilditch, the hook-junkie. The ball soars high in the air towards the waiting fielder......

Benaud: "Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear."

Marvellous.

I thought he'd died for a minute there.

"Jones...! Bowden...!"

Love that - topped off the moment a treat.

I remember in the 1993 Ashes when TGM was on fire. In one of the later tests Warne has bowled a ripper that has drifted on to leg stump and then ripped across the face of the bat to just miss the off stump. Slight pause and Richie says "Useful".
