Brad Haddin is a dirty rotten cheat

Post by Henry on Sun 01 Feb 2009, 00:28

Knocked off the bails with his gloves and then claimed that Neil Broom had been bowled. Cheat.

That sort of thing ended Greg Dyer's career.

I wondered why Broom hovered there after he was bowled. It was almost simultaneous but the point is Haddin's gloves shouldn't have been in front of the stumps, it's against the law.

I didn't see it, is this a genuinely serious incident?

Clarke thought he had Broom clean bowled. Replays suggested that it could have hit Haddin's gloves first. In any case his gloves were in front of the stumps which is against the rules and he would have known this. Broom lingered at the stumps but Haddin didn't admit his error. Looked like very poor sportsmanship.

I thought gloves in front of the stumps is only illegal if you interfere with the batsmen or the ball.

Are you saying once the gloves past the line of the stumps it is automatically illegal?

Gloves in front usually means you can't get a stumping. I didn't think it disqualified other dismissals.

Of course, if his gloves actually hit the stumps and they didn't withdraw the appeal then that is seriously poor.

Did the umpire give him out, or did he walk after lingering?

Did the players watch the replay as he was walking off and should Ponting have recalled him?

He lingered, then went and nobody could work out why. When they replayed the incident they worked out why he lingered after being bowled. According to Ian Chappell, the keeper's gloves aren't meant to be in front of the stumps according to the rules.

35.2 Clarke to Broom, OUT, Australia claw back, now there's a bit of controversy here, Clarke gets it to skid through on a good length, Broom makes a lot of room to cut but he's beaten for pace, the ball appears to clip the top of the off bail but replays indicate that Haddin had his gloves in front of the stumps before the ball could make contact. Did the ball actually hit the stumps? Did Haddin whip off the bails by mistake? Very inconclusive but no wonder Broom looked perplexed as he walked back

Law 40.3

3. Position of wicket-keeper
The wicket-keeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker's end from the moment the ball comes into play until
(a) a ball delivered by the bowler
either (i) touches the bat or person of the striker
or (ii) passes the wicket at the striker's end

or (b) the striker attempts a run.

In the event of the wicket-keeper contravening this Law, the umpire at the striker's end shall call and signal No ball as soon as possible after the delivery of the ball.
