And here's a good one. McAfee's latest update contained something that has caused some computers to clag up.

CPU on main machine is running at 100% and no internet access at all.

Bugger...

Ah but I see it only affects PCs with XP OS

"McAfee's popular antivirus software failed spectacularly on Wednesday, causing tens of thousands of Windows XP computers to crash or repeatedly reboot.

A buggy update that the company released early in the day turned the software's formidable defenses against malicious software inward, prompting it to attack a vital component of Microsoft Windows. The update was available for business customers for about four hours before distribution was halted, McAfee said."

Never thought I'd ever say "Glad I've got Vista." Shocked

And PMSL at this from the same article...

"McAfee apologized to customers for the problem, which seemed to affect primarily Windows XP computers running Microsoft's Service Pack 3, but downplayed its impact. "We are not aware of significant impact on consumers," the company said in a statement sent to CNET at 2 p.m. PT. "

Yep, McAfee's just lost a customer.

Although it's eqaully possible one of the three idiot teenage boy Zatellites managed to transfer something to my computer via USB. But McAfee should have picked that up anyway...

I've been running Avast! in parallel with McAfee for a week or so after I picked up a Trojan that McAfee didn't spot. Avast! found it and got rid of it.

Only a 30-day trial version but seems pretty schmick.

Well, a full reinstall of Windows seems to have done the trcik.

Of course now I have to reactivate a bunch of programs, reinstall drivers for everything, and Mod knows what else...

I've never had to buy a registered version to remove anything.

Maybe the spyware has infected your registry too?

Maybe it's infected your brain too, Skully. Spybot S&D is FREE FREE FREE - !!!

I downloaded the free version PCS, did the scan and then it told me I had this particular spyware. It then gave me a message saying if I wanted to remove the offending software I needed to buy a registered version of Spybot S&D.
shrug
try malwarebytes anti malware. seems to be effective

Cheers CT but Petey steared me right and I got the free version of SpyBot which seems OK. It did have trouble removing one Trojan I picked up, hence me DLing Avast!
