Clarke spewing about, missing season opener
Literally it seems...
Michael Clarke ruled out of Emirates All*Star Twenty20 through illness
Cricket Australia today advised Australian batsman Michael Clarke will miss the Emirates All*star Twenty20 match tomorrow at the GABBA through illness.
Clarke batted with a runner in the final Test of Australia’s VB tour of India this week and the illness has not improved sufficiently for him to take part in tomorrow’s match.
Cricket Australia Doctor Trefor James said:
“Michael Clarke contracted a severe viral illness during the final Test against India in Nagpur and although his condition is improving, he is not well enough to take his place in the Emirates All*Star Twenty20 game.
“His condition will continue to be monitored and we are confident he will recover in time to be available for selection in the first 3 Mobile Test match against New Zealand at the GABBA next week.”
Tasmanian off-spinner Xavier Doherty has been selected to replace Clarke in the 12-man squad after a successful Australia A Tour of India and consistent form at interstate level this season.
Doherty said being selected for Australia was a great honour:
“It is really surprising but I am very excited by the opportunity I have been given. I had a message on my phone last night when we got off the field against Victoria and it really came out of the blue,” Doherty said.
“Last night was a bit like Christmas Eve, I had a lot of trouble sleeping and tomorrow should be great.”
Cricket Australia National Selection Panel Chairman of Selectors Andrew Hilditch said:
“Xavier Doherty was one of the outstanding spinners in the KFC Big Bash last season. His selection gives us an opportunity to have a look at a specialist spinner in this form of the game and we are sure he will handle himself with distinction.”
Michael Hussey will now take over captaincy of the Australian side for tomorrow’s game.
The Johnnie Walker ACA All*Stars also have a change through injury. Ashley Noffke, who is struggling with a back injury, has been replaced with Victorian all-rounder Andrew McDonald.
