There was nothing particularly wrong with his batting, except maybe he could have gone a bit faster but that didn't matter, it was just the zero degree of difficulty and the way he went through the motions took 'pedestrian' to a new level.

Most of his hundreds in between were very good, some were monumental.

Oh, and before Horrie jumps down my throat in his new role as Ricky's Perry Mason: Not enforcing the follow on in Brisbane might have won us the match in Aelaide a week later, so no criticism of that decision is implied - if there had been I'd have called him 'Capt Clueles' or something instead..

. tho I do not see myself as a ponting defender...i just think there has been an extraordinairy over(as it were)reaction

Langer's first and only double ton was as scratchy as they come. Bowled off a no-ball in his '40s, was reprieved by umpires atleast half a dozen times.

Rameez Raja's ton in the opening game of the 1992 WC was quite horrible- don't remember if it was his 1st.

I know of at least two SL double tons that shouldn't even make the FC stats list.

Hayden's first was against the Windies and was a shocker. Cappelli later described his 50 in the infamous Perth two day test as worthy of a ton.

Simmo's first Test ton was his laborious 311 at Manchester in 1964. Apparently it was akin to watching paint dry.

Re last test centuries: David Boon overcame the serious obstacles of (in ascending order) chronic eyesight, divers boots footwork, and having Neville Oliver as a neighbour to play many fine innings for Australia, but his last ton (v SL at MCG, the day shot-put boy got nailed) was emphatically NOT one of them.

One commentator said that Boon couldn't possibly be dismissed by these bowlers unless his batting improved. It was sad to watch but a tribute to his professionalism that he placed such a massive value on his wicket, even at the absolute end of his career.
