So who should replace Ponting as captain?

Post by Hass on Sun Nov 09, 2008 4:53 pm

In another thread I unequivocally called for his sacking.

I think the general consensus around the forum supports that view.

As vice-captain Michael Clarke is the obvious choice. But he was made vice-captain with a view to the long-term future. I don't think he's ready for the job full-time and haven't seen enough from him to make me confident.

Mike Hussey is assured of a place in the team and seems to have a good cricket brain. However he was lacklustre when leading the one-day team and could well turn out to be another Ponting.

The smartest and safest choice would be Katich. He has a wealth of captaincy experience and has shown that he's capable of thinking outside the box. The biggest thing going against Katich in the past was his inability to nail down a spot in the team. But that's no longer an issue - he's well and truly cemented his place.

The board and the selectors will probably be too gutless to sack Ponting in the first place, but we can always hope.

Cheers.

Hass

The biggest problem Paris had as JAMODI captain was the selectors replaced Punter with TAYPODGE ...

Welcome aboard the bandwagon Hass, I think I was saying in 05 that Punter shouldn't be the captain.

But there's not much point changing the skipper once the ship has hit the iceberg.

I can put the date as at least as far back as Dec 2004 when we played Pakistan in Perth ...we were badly captained and won by 491 runs ...

He didnt kill off the Pakistani first innings (at 8/111) and bowled himself and Boof to supposedly give his fast bowlers a rest before enforcing the follow on ....Figgy and Sami put on 60 ...and then Ponting didnt even bother to enforce the follow on

I've voted Pup. Might as well go with the heir apparent.

I'm hardly new to the bandwagon. When Ponting was made one-day captain in 2002 I vowed to boycott one-day internationals for as long as he was captain (I eased up about three games into the South African series).

Over the years I've given him a bit more slack. He's managed to bumble through. But after yesterday's performance he cannot be allowed to bumble through any longer.

Fair enough.

I love watching him bat, but I'm at the point where I think he's a cancer in the team as captain.

When was the last time Aus sacked a captain but retained him in the team as a player?
