Re: SA's AA selections gone mad
One thing all such systems have in common is that the last thing they have in mind is the comfort of the person at the receiving end.Bradman wrote:That's the problem you get when you start classifying your citizens by race. I knew an old Aboriginal stockman who was at various times of his life classed as Aboriginal (through his Mum), half caste (through his Chinese Dad), Aboriginal again when he was old enough to drink (he didn't actually start drinking 'til he was thirty, though made up for it), European (when the station manager realised he needed him to manage white stockmen; again through his Chinese father, go figure the White Australia Policy), was forbiodden from marrying the love of his life because she was a pure bred Aboriginal and he was technically a European despite being the ceremony man for his Aboriginal clan, and was finally married to the love of his life after a dispensation was granted by the Territory Administrator who also performed the service. The Administrator's wife bought the ring for him because his wages were indentured.
Truth is stranger than fiction.
