Re: Contracts of Indian cricketers will expire tomorrow

Some revealing figures,

Why pay the selectors merely Rs 25 lakh (approximately US$54,000) per annum? Why not a crore (approx $215,000), as Dilip Vengsarkar, the out-going chairman of selectors, has asked? That's what the members of the IPL's governing council earned for attending a couple of meetings. The national coach is paid more than a crore a year. And even the coach of the National Cricket Academy has a salary larger than what's proposed for the men charged with deciding the fate of India's elite cricketers. If the Indian board expects national selectors to take up full-time positions, it can certainly afford to make it worth their while. After all, who would want to be a selector, a job littered with more thorns than flowers, if you can make 20 times as much money doing commentary?

kumble retired after hardly playing any cricket between 2003 and 2007 and being dropped from the 2007 world cup

the senior players decided not to play the t20 world cup. they played india's only t20 match before it and have not played any since

the senior players decided not to play the t20 world cup.

But Josh in his own inimitable line of thinking believes that they were forced to drop out of Twenty20 team.

If India were to be banned there would be no contract problems.

Actually Sachin, Sourav and Rahul pulled out of the T20WC themselves.

A bit like the oldies in the house for whom the music in thesixties and seventies were the best.

That's because the music from the 60s and the 70s was the best.

Sorry Vikas, but I do not agree with you again.

Ganguly has not been untouchable but was dropped from all forms of game and that was because of his poor performance and a "media-created" controversy. VVS has not been under the scanner always for selectors but only for media.

I see that you are speaking their language deeply influenced by media and taking every word that is written in junk papers as truth!

Chandan - Ganguly was dropped and then picked up again and then dropped from the one day side again. BUT - was he demoted in grade for not playing for 8 months a year and then for not being considered for the Masala matches? Kumble was not a part of one day scheme for close to 3 years now? But a grade demotion? Did it happen? That should explain things up. What has happened on record. No theories needed if any. Last tim when the contracts isue cropped up 2 years back when Dravid was captain, Ganguly, Dravid and Sachin were dictating the negotiations post WC debacle and Kumble was the voice of the seniors. Nuff said.

Phil - Part of what Josh said is correct. The senior players weilded a lot of clout. This has come down a bit since the Chappel era especially after the seniors flopped the WC and the BCCI finally saw the need to initiate a transistion, especially after the success youngsters had in T20 and ODIs. It was a compulsion rather than a policy from the BCCI end.

I hope you are aware that when Ganguly was dropped and Dravid was appointed as captain in 2005, players contract were not renewed for one full year.

Are you aware? If not, it tells you how much you know about contracts. so finally before being renewed how many players were contracted and in which grades? Do you know?

I'm sure that you do not know. And even then you are talking about promotion and demotion?

I'm talking about one specific year for which I provided the list of contracted players and gave reasons as why eacg person was in such and such category. Yet you prefer to believe your own perception.
