BCCI takes Rs 1,000 cr pay cheque
With the financial markets in a freefall, oil prices on the rise, inflation on a high and giant international conglomerates declaring bankruptcy, it might come as a surprise that one organisation is celebrating a bumper year. In fact, the best year in its 79-year history.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be told by N. Srinivasan, its treasurer, at the board's annual general meeting on September 27 and 28, that the BCCI's income for the year has crossed Rs 1,000 crore, well in excess of earlier estimates. The board's income in 2007-08 was Rs 1000.41 crore, up a strong 46 per cent from Rs 651.83 crore in 2006-07.
The figure represents a significant improvement from the BCCI's own forecast for the year, which was Rs 862.30 crore. The significant driver behind this rise was the increase in income from the sale of media rights, up to Rs 559.31 crore from the previous year's Rs 313.62 crore.
But it's not just television rights - every other source of income has seen a mammoth rise. What this means is that almost everyone under the BCCI umbrella stands to benefit.
International cricketers, who took home Rs 43 crore between them in 2006-07 now received Rs 66 crore, with an equal amount being paid out in domestic cricketers' wages. What this meant was a player got paid Rs 37,000 for each day of Ranji cricket.
But it's not only current cricketers who are better off. More than 860 former cricketers, umpires and widows of cricketers draw monthly pensions.
The list is long, and for the moment, there's enough and more in the coffers to keep a whole lot of people happy.

So a 1000 crore=US$218,000,000?
Some of that would be handy at Indian grass roots rather than in Modi's pocket

And whats more, former cricketers, umpires and widows of former cricketers are also getting benefitted from this.
Only if they can spend some of this booty in improving the condition of Indian grounds as well.

In view of WC'11 they're probably doing something in that direction.
Quite a few stadiums are being renovated, plus I heard from somewhere that world's biggest ever cricket stadium is being constructed somewhere near Chennai for WC'11.

So the Big Cricket Castle of India are actually putting money to good use and plughing a lot of it back into players wages even at First class level and providing pensions for cricketers to look after their family instead of putting it into a pile and having a big wank over it?
Evil Bastards.

Doing good in the short term spang... Theres hardly a blueprint for long-term and grass roots is there?
Building the biggest stadium doesn't help matey boy at 7-13 develop his skills?
Its hardly a long term vision is it - although the pensions thing is fairly good idea considering the money cricketers usexd to earn I presume

I don't know the ins and outs of what they're spending the money on but the quotes below from the article above suggest they are doing something about the infrastructure of Indian cricket and other sports.

What’s more, after India’s success at Beijing, Sharad Pawar has given an additional Rs 50 crore for the development of other sports
Well, to start with, it means a substantial increase in pay for players, who are at the very centre of generating these sums of money. The BCCI spends 26% of its top line on the payment of player wages, both domestic and international. Of this, 13% goes to the payment of wages of international cricketers. A total of Rs 66 crore will be paid out to those who play for the senior national team, up from Rs 43 crore. A similar amount is spent on pa-ying the wages of domestic cr-icketers – and since the numbe-rs are larger the share of the pie is less – working out to Rs 37,000 per day of domestic cricket.
Add to this a three-year 313 crore spend on infrastructure development, a pension scheme that covers more than 860 former players, umpires and widows of former players and annual subventions to state associations, and you have a whole lot of people who are benefiting from the cricket windfall

Well I hope for the sake of cricket that this infrastructure isn't just making the current test/IPL grounds larger!!!
Its fairly pointless having all that money and not chucking some in at grass roots to keep the money coming?!

I don't disagree with that at all but it's easy to look at the numbers that recent BCCI contracts have bought in and assume that they are simply whoring cricket/Indian cricket out without scratching beneath the surface.
I think Spiderman's uncle said it best when he said With Great Pawar comes great etc, etc...

spang if they put back in properly then all's good. I'm a cricket fan and want to see proper quality matches in the sport.
I think most on here would say they want to see strong Indian, Windies and Pak sides out there.
