Meanwhile the tickets for next year's Ashes series are selling like hot cakes so maybe this claim is hard to justify. Ashes series still remain #1 in the eyes of the average Aussie fan.

Suggest you pay a fleeting visit to the UK during an ashes series to begin to understand the meaning of 'arch rivalry' !

As series go, it has been the closest matched mainly due to Indias batting strength over that decade.
Let's not talk as though India have been the second best side throughout those years though. Think you would just have to ask Australians what series defeat would hurt more?

And it seems just the other other day that the subi's here were talking Ind/Pak up as bigger than the Ashes.

Re: Gilly suggests that India is the new arch-rival.
easy boys. i just said india is australia's only real 'cricket' competition on the test stage of the last decade or so. the ashes of course is a more iconic series with its richer history
just for comparison aus' record for series in this decade vs each team
vs india 6-5
vs ban 4-0
vs eng 14-4
vs nz 7-0
vs pak 6-0
vs sa 10-1
vs sl 6-0
vs wi 13-1
vs zim 2-0
