Bad-boy Roy to captain Bulls

September 29, 2008

ANDREW Symonds' road to redemption will lift another gear Tuesday when he skippers Queensland for the first time.

The disciplined Australian all-rounder received a surprise captaincy appointment on Monday to lead the Bulls against Indian Twenty20 franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.

The left-field decision ahead of new captain Chris Simpson sees Queensland doing its best to help present Symonds as a reformed character after he was overlooked for the four-Test tour of India due to his "gone-fishing" episode in the Northern Territory.

Simpson will also play in the practice match at Brisbane's at Allan Border Field - the second of two bash-and-crash friendlies on the day - as will former Bulls captain Martin Love.

But Bulls coach Trevor Barsby said the decision was one of a few experiments as he used the practice games to trial different line-ups and scenarios.
Want to watch Australia play in India? You can with Fox Sports Travel Another is top-order batsman Greg Moller wicketkeeping in the opening encounter before regular gloveman Chris Hartley playing the second.

“If Chris Hartley wakes up ill on the morning of a game, we know that we have got Greg as an option, considering he was a keeper originally in his youth cricket days,” Barsby said.

“The same would be if Chris Simpson was injured or unavailable for a game, these matches against the Knight Riders are a good chance for us to have Andrew Symonds test the water as captain and lead by example on the field.

Symonds has ticked all the boxes in his comeback to date, issuing a public apology for the Darwin debacle before swallowing his pride and hitting the Brisbane grade scene.

There's been speculation he's been pencilled in as a shadow player by Australian selectors for the Indian tour, so impressed they have been by his handling of the setback.

But Symonds did fail to set the world on fire in his provincial return on Sunday and will want to showcase his talents better on Tuesday.

He made just three in two bats (two and one) and returned figures of 0-8 (four overs) and 2-24 (three overs) as the two sides split the opening games in the six-match series.

Symonds' Australian one-day teammate James Hopes is being rested with a groin niggle but is expected to play in one of the final two matches on Thursday.

Veteran Bulls Love and Andy Bichel will make their first appearances in Queensland colours this season with Bichel playing as a middle-order batsman in the first game and Love opening the batting in the second.

Veteran Bulls Love and Andy Bichel will make their first appearances in Queensland colours this season with Bichel playing as a middle-order batsman in the first game and Love opening the batting in the second.

Bichel hasn't bowled in grade cricket this season so it looks as though he won't be playing in the opening Shield game.

Game 1
DOUBLE WHAMMY FOR BULLS

Sunday 28 September 2008

The XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls managed a rare feet in their opening Twenty20 practice match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Allan Border Field today, managing to “win” the first game twice.

The Knight Riders were restricted to 8-79 from their 20 overs, and with Queensland cantering to the target in just the eighth over without losing a wicket.

Both camps hastily came together and elected to continue the Bulls innings, setting Queensland a revised target of 179.

The Bulls duly reached that target in the 18th over, with batsmen Greg Moller (74), Clinton Perren (66), Lee Carseldine (31no) all enjoying their hit-out.

Those hoping for some typically lusty hitting from Andrew Symonds had to bide their time, with the Queensland and Australian allrounder dismissed for two with the second target in sight.

Earlier, Symonds had proven a challenge for the rookie Knight Riders line-up, bowling three maidens on the way to 0-8 from his four overs.

Ben Laughlin (2-15 off 4) and captain Chris Simson (2-11 off 2) were the pick of the attack.

Game 2
KNIGHT RIDERS HIT BACK

Sunday 28 September 2008

The Knight Riders proved sterner opponents in the second match of the opening Twenty20 double-header today, dismissing the Bulls for 129 and then snatching a spirited win.

With nine wickets down, Kolkata needed 11 runs off the final over, bowled by Grant Sullivan. A top edge boundary to third man off the first ball meant it was seven runs off five balls.

A six by tailender Siddarth Kaul off the third last ball meant the scores were tied, and two dot balls by the Bulls quick meant that it came down to a final ball thriller.

Kaul hit the ball straight to Andrew Symonds who had the chance to throw down the stumps, but his shy at the wickets just missed with the tailenders scampering to safety and the win.

The Knight Riders, made up of a rookie group with just a handful of players with first class experience, charged onto the field to celebrate their victory. It might have been just a practice match, but coach John Buchanan was happy for his group to enjoy the winning sensation.

The Knight Riders finished at 9-130, with paceman Ben Cutting taking 4-28 from his four overs and Symonds taking 2-24 from three overs.

Among his wickets was a fine piece of work by allrounder Lee Carseldine, who took a skied shot on the deep mid wicket boundary, and then popped the ball back into the air to a surprised Grant Sullivan to complete the catch.

Allrounder Michael Buchanan, the former Queensland squad member now guesting with the Knight Riders, top-scored for the victors with 49 off 31 balls.

Bulls captain Chris Simpson hit 34 off 21 while Moller enjoyed his second stint at the crease to stroke 29 off 25 balls.

I made a slight mistake in my reply. The article was referring to another two matches being played on Tuesday. There are also two more matches on Thursday.
