London - South African fast bowling great Allan Donald has launched an extraordinary attack on compatriot Graeme Smith, coinciding with the first day of the Test series against England at Lord's here.

Quoted in the official programme for the series which began on Thursday, Donald, England's bowling coach last summer but also no stranger to the South African High Performance programme, heaped praise on England spearhead Ryan Sidebottom: "His great asset is swinging the ball at lively pace and very late. I think that's going to cause massive problems for Graeme Smith with the technique Smith has got.

"Smith has one of the worst techniques I have ever seen of a Test cricketer and it's going to be tested by one of the world's best at the moment."

The Proteas captain is bound to be stung - though just as possibly motivated - by Donald's comments when he sees them, especially considering that he is in the thick of a Test match at the very ground where he scored a famous 259 in his team's victory by an innings in 2003.

And, in fairness, Donald had rather kinder words for some of the Proteas bowlers, saying of Dale Steyn: "Where he has got better recently is his capability to sustain an ability to swing the ball away late at very high pace throughout the day.

"Two years ago he could only bowl one quick spell but he was very weak at the end of it and couldn't come back. He's a fit bloke now.

"I have yet to see him being put under pressure by any of the top players in the world so far. That is how well he has bowled."

Doesn't Donald coach Fronty?

Donald obviously hasn't seen Michael Yardy bat.
