Re: 1st test v SA squad announcement
You'll find there'll be rubbish in all the extended squads of 30. Of course the Aussies have extraordinary depth but most of the rest will name blokes who are merely making up the numbers.

Re: 1st test v SA squad announcement
Did do that squad off the top of my head, you can have Sales in there if you like.
Will stand by Lewis - FFS! Compare his ODI record, especially his economy rate to other recent England bowlers. He's streets ahead of most of them. Most be at least worth a place in a best 30.

Augustus wrote:Your credibility went as soon as I saw Samit Patel wasn't in there. And when you picked four wicket-keepers. What's the point of more than a tenth of the squad being made up of keepers? England will take two; Prior and Ambrose. You'd think that Strauss, Cook, Bell, Pietersen, Bopara, Shah and Wright will make up the main batsman. Sidebottom, Anderson, Broad, Tremlett, Mascarenhas, Swann and Panesar seem like definites. Fourteen further, total random players, probably including Vikram Solanki will then be required. Half of them will be from Sussex, the other half will have had sexual relations either with Michael Vaughan or Peter Moores, or possibly both at the same time.
I don't consider Matt Prior a wicket-keeper. He can bat though, so he's in as a batsman. 3 keepers out of 30 seems fair enough to me.
Chaps, Lets see your 30's then....!

I'd not include - McGrath,Cook,Read,Blackwell,Napier,Lewis & Lungley.
I would include Sales, but i'm struggling for names tbh. 30 is way too big to be meaningful...

Well McGrath is the top English run scorer in 20/20, can bowl a bit too. Read is the best thing since sliced bread, and is a possible captain, Cook will (eventually) develop into an effective ODI player I feel. Blackwell is a fat bloke who can slog it a bit, Lewis has an excellent ODI career record, Napier scored 875 not out off 17 balls in a recent 20/20 and was one of the best English performing bowlers in List A cricket this season, and Lungley - well I saw him play once last year and he looked okay. Did say the list was off the top of my head!
Will sit down round the selection table with a selection of stuffed animals and go over the squad in more detail this afternoon. We'll have bit of paper, post-it notes, maybe even a board to pin stuff to. Will be just like the real thing.

Ah yes Key, I'd also include Carberry.
Gough WTF?
Read & Solanki won't get picked - they're ICL tainted.

Craig White - legend! How did I miss him out of my squad?

Re: 1st test v SA squad announcement
Kreg Whiiite? Is i' still aliiive?
I chose the following as 'left-field' picks:
Sales - fat, no-one likes him. Probably one of the only people to be averaging 50 in CC, 40 in List 'A' and 40 in T20 over the last 5 years.
RA White - Plenty of shots, started off with a bang, shown he can smack a ball for a sustained period in every comp this season.
Afzaal - Been tonking like a beast in the FPT.
Napier - People go on about his T20 innings, forgetting he's one of the top wicket-takers this season in List 'A'.
Gough - Tango man has been picking plenty of sticks himself - experienced. Orange. Perfect.

Tough job, Rob. Basically, a lot of List 'A' stuff here has been 40/45 overs... that's not a lot of time, relatively speaking - that's the first thing. Secondly, there aren't many people in the whole world averaging 40 in T20 cricket.
