Glastonbury sets on the bbc iplayer.

Post by Lara Lara Laughs on Sun 29 Jun 2008, 01:40

Some pretty awesome stuff around. Just watching Buddy Guy (followed by Ethiopiques and Joan Armatrading). It's class.

The Jay-Z show was tops if you're into great tunes. I'm trying to find the Massive Attack set but they don't seem to have put it on there, the dickheads.

Also, in music related news - The Specials are reforming!!!! Can't wait.

I've read a few articles this morning saying that Jay-Z's set was rapturously received and that he was the undisputed star of Glastonbury 2008... I watched a few minutes last night and checked his Wonderwall cover on Youtube this morning and I couldn't help thinking that anyone who knew the words to his songs could give a similar "performance".

And I like hip hop, some of Jay-Z's stuff included, but what the f*ck is entertaining about seeing someone effectively doing rap karaoke on a stage?

The Wonderwall bit was in response to Noel Gallagher's comments that Glastonbury should be about guitar bands only. And it lasted for about 30 seconds. The other hour of the performance was probably what people were raving about....

Yeah, I saw some of that as well. What was so great exactly? All he does is walk around the stage rapping. Like I say, anyone who knew the words to his songs could do as good a job.

To be fair mate, that's a ridiculous statement.

I'm not really a big fan of Jay Z, he is very over rated, he is marketed well and surrounded by people who make good beats for him. Lyrically he's too simple, his flow and voice is boring, as Noel Gallagher said "he sounds like he is just talking over a bunch of Cd's".

Plus his voice is irritating as hell.

What was so special about it though? Was there anything more to it than him walking around the stage rapping?

Writing the lyrics and the songs requires some degree of talent, but reciting the songs isn't exactly hard is it?

If you were given the task of either reciting some of Jay-Z's songs on stage or taking kirk hammett's role as lead guitarist at a Metallica gig, which one do you think would be harder?

This is the same for nearly all hip-hop gigs. There are a few exceptions, but in general it pretty much is just talking over some Cd's played really loud.

Mak - I tend to disagree. Think he's one of the best around personally. Makes a lot of very clever music. A lot of the popular ones that everyone knows aren't particularly deep or meaningful but they're top club tunes. As for the CDs thing - Jay Z is one of the few who takes his own band around with him. But each to his own. shrug

vilkrang - I think most people would end up looking a plonker if they did either. You could just as easily say it's easy to stand on stage and play the guitar if you know the chords, unless you're imitating a genius like Hendrix and the rest. It's not particularly hard for a guitarist to play a song that they've played a trillion times at gigs. It was the creation that was the difficult part and in that, rap is the same as any other music.

Btw, Metallica are sh*t. Sort it out dude. Wink

Their first 4 albums are great, but yeah, everything after that is utter sh*te.

Aye.

Nah, to be fair, I don't think I like any metal bands. They're probably not shit, just not my kind of music.

I was speaking to Lynval Golding the other day about The Specials reforming, and he was dead keen. That was basically just a hideous name drop, but what are you going to do?

Also, Before you write off metal, listen to Sikth. Even if you still don't like metal afterwards, you can at least appreciate men with high voices creaming 'buttcheeks'.

Rapping on stage is hard. I'd know because my 'band' embarassed themselves the first time we tried.

It's a pretty good namedrop though. Better than most of Dello and Danny's but some way off my Wayne White one. Bastard! I want to have informal chats with members of the Specials.

*shakes fist menacingly*

If you're going to tell me you jammed with him, I shall have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

What's going on with all these reunions? Madness are back together and recording new stuff too. I'm certainly not complaining though! I reckon you should dissolve your band and then reform next week just so that you're, you know, with it.

Regarding the metal stuff - noted.Laughing
