England v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Chester-le-Street, 15th June
Andrew Strauss has been recalled to the squad to cover for Alastair Cook who's struggling with a shoulder injury.
Is this a case of easing a few of the old guard back into the set-up for old time's sake, with an eye on the bumper pay-days ahead in the Stanford money orgy?
Dr Comfort's view on the Stanford moolah:

Dr Comfort's view on the Stanford moolah:
... it's not just about the money for me - even though I could pay off the mortgage or sort myself out a new downstairs bathroom with the cash, no doubt.
I know me, and I know no matter what I earned I'd waste it all in three months anyway.
I'd be the bloke who buys a Ferrari and a helicopter and then writes them both off within a week. I'm rubbish with money and, as a result, I genuinely don't get excited about it.
What I do get excited about is the prospect of playing in a match of such magnitude. Some players will regard it with excitement, some with trepidation, but I want to be the best I can be at any form of the game I put my hand to and that would be the pinnacle.
Of course, it could all be for nothing - if you lose it's basically a two-day holiday in Antigua and three months of sleepless nights wondering where it all went wrong - but I'd love to be there.

You can bet they will get Fred over there even if its on one leg, and too bloody right.
The rewards should go to those who done the hard yards for English cricket. Not hacker jacks like Luke Sussex...
Get anyone who we want to keep from the clutches of IPL a game - it's not as if it's an official international anyway.
Fred, S Jones etc...
Timmy Ambrose must think this cricket lark is easy. Made for life....

As for the game itself, I remember the last game between these sides here
We were skittled for about a ton by the ordinary James Franklin and lost badly although I remember Harmy bowling 95mph...

I think we all know it's a moot point as England will lose the winner-takes-all game. Probably by a landslide.
But it's an interesting one. The XI that played yesterday is - with perhaps Flintoff in for Marcarenhas - England's best team, you would imagine (or why would they pick it?).
That means Sidebottom missing out. Judging by what a pork chop he carries on like when someone plays and misses, he'll probably shit a brick. Or a lung. Perhaps he'll just keep shitting until all his insides are hanging out.

Forgot SideBum - yeah i'd get him in there too.
Give a game to all our major contracted players - Vaughan too if necessary.
Why would people get pissy if that happened - it's not like it's a proper game is it?

What IPL team in its right mind would want Vaughan?
The IPL may not be official but would the Stanford ones be either? Players have just as much chance of injury in a one-off that means so much as the IPL when they're rotated and some end up playing one or no matches.

I'm sure an IPL team would be willing to pay a relatively smallish amount ($100,000?) to have Vaughan's captaincy experience in and around a franchise.

I thought a smallish amount was $30,000. That's what Marsh cost. It's a moot point as to whether Vaughan's captaincy would be worth more than Marsh's flashing blade. Unless of course you're being sarcastic.

Warne showed the value of good captaincy. When you consider that the salary cap is likely to be lifted by the franchise owners next season, $100,000 will be a relatively small amount, both to the IPL and what the England players could earn in the Stanford game.

And yes, I think it is a case of England subtly trying to bring the foundations upon which English cricket is built (Like Strauss) back into the ODI/T20 mix with an eye on the Stanford game. Vaughan would be stretching it, however. England will need to remember that they do actually have to win the match in order to get the money.....

Marsh's contract was worth $US50.000

I imagine the Windians are paid a great deal less than their England counterparts and come from far poorer backgrounds and so will be playing like a bunch of feral tigers for the jackpot and will more than likely win.
God I hope they do.
Anyway back to planet 50 overs- anyone's game you'd think. I like planet 50 overs, 20 overs isn't a planet, it's a plutoid.
