So, I wonder who will be taking the field as Australia's Ashes spinner then? Could they even consider playing an all-pace attack next summer?

Very good player. Suffered unfair comparisons to Warne. Finishes with an excellent record.
Played.
Played.

Aye, though on the evidence of these 2 tests is rapidly declining.

He looked incredibly poor in these two tests.
Probably jumped before he was puched to be fair. We would have given our left testicles for a spinner of his quality to be fair!!

I find it funny that the Aussies used to criticise him for conceding a boundary an over. Before (and after) Warne, that was the standard for leggies. Even the great ones like Qadir.
But he's certainly come to the end. Credit to him for recognising his declining standards. He has just had a wrist operation after all.

"As I said many times last summer, there is no way I will ever walk onto a cricket field unless I can guarantee that I can dismiss top order batsmen consistently. The prospect of letting myself and the team down is simply not an option. I have worked way too hard for too long to sabotage my achievements by playing Test cricket for the wrong reasons."

Exactly - any other non-Asian country would have had him as an automatic choice for the last decade, he might have got 400 or 500 wickets if it wasn't for being around at the same time as Warne.
Best days are obviously behind him now but it looks like spin could be the problem position for Australia to fill for some time to come (well, the rest of the world is certainly hoping so...)

Good player who lost his action as he got older. I think he'd have played many more Test Matches for every other Test Country bar Sri Lanka, and even then he'd have probably played a fair few more.

While every other country in world is overflowing with young spin bowling talent...
As I said on another thread, spin is headed for another dark age. The likes of Warne, Murali and, to a degree, Kumble won't be seen again for a long time. Once in a generation bowlers - if not longer.
There's no-one too special on the horizon for anybody.

No, but it will be nice to see an Australian side with a weakness, even if it's the same one that just about everyone else has!
