I've heard some. Read about 'coffin hotels' (or some such) in Tokyo in the 80s - cost of living was so high in that city that workers who had to stay nights were sleeping in coffin sized (literally) spaces in hotels.

Capsule hotels . . . I've stayed in a few myself . . . but they are generally just for people stayong overnight in the city or who don't want a long commute home after a long day . . .

I believe the woman in the linked story above only allowed herself to get caught so there was room for Trev in the closet in Japan.
