Matthew Hayden to return to Australia

Australian opening batsman Matthew Hayden will return to Australia from the VB Tour of the West Indies after not recovering sufficiently from the right achilles tendon injury which ruled him out of last week's first Test in Kingston.

Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said the decision to send Hayden home was made in order to ensure his fitness during Australia's upcoming international schedule.

"Matthew Hayden's right Achilles tendon injury has not made sufficient progress during his time in the West Indies and as such he will not be able to participate in the second Test and was highly unlikely to be available for the third Test. With the large volume of cricket to be played over the next 18 months it was decided he should return to Australia to undergo rehabilitation and consult specialists. This means he will not be available for the five one-day internationals against the West Indies."

Cricket Australia National Selection Panel Chairman Andrew Hilditch, currently with the side in the West Indies, said:

"It is obviously disappointing for Matthew and the Australian cricket side, but the priority now is for Matthew to return home, get specialist advice and commence preparation for a return to cricket for the Top End Tour against Bangladesh, the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and our forthcoming tour to India.

"It means that Brad Hodge will remain with the side which is richly deserved given his strong performance in the first Test. We will be meeting in the next few days to discuss Matthew's replacement for the one-day tour of the West Indies," Hilditch concluded.

With this being a longer term injury, I'd suggest Hussey has to bite the bullet and open. Many Aussies were willing to make accusations against Skunkhead for batting too low, Hussey would make a far better opener than Krabich.

But more disturbing, that bit from Hilditch in the last paragraph. Since when has 'strong performance' been an allowable substitution for 'lead-footed effort'?

The obvious thing to do is make Hayden retire from JAMODIs. WTF would they risk him at the Champions Trophy?

Not every international career has a happy ending. Hayden's ego is probably too big to retire from anything. Could get messy......

Well if Hussey decides/is asked to open, then one half of it will still be solid. Could be a revolving door at the other end however with the likes of Jaques, Rogers, Hughes, Katich, Hodge, and even Watson contenders.

Depends if they use Marsh or NotParis to replace Hayden. Marsh will open if he plays. I think Ponting should open since he's the best batsman in the team but it won't happen.

I agree that Ponting should open. He is a better opening option than Clarke.

Sean Marsh's IPL form might get him a gig too.

No way. India, plus a chance to redeem his record in England coming up... he'll be back, if its humanly possible, and all indications are that it is.

How's the 'master' batsman Ricky Ponting doing these days?

The injury is supposed to be chronic. Ie, no matter how much treatment he receives, it is still likely to flare up again. Can't see how he'll be able to get through a whole test tour, to be honest.
