Truly unfortunate names!
1. Someone I know was referred to a Dr Bonkers today. Good thing he isn't a psychiatrist... (Mind you, he specialises in whipping out prostates, so perhaps that is even more unfortunate.)
2. Considering the name of the guy who wrote this article, it is no wonder he grew up to have such screwed-up ideas...

The surname 'Lund' will forever be a source of perpetual amusement to many Indians.
As does the Indian name 'Dikshit' to people from many English speaking nations.

Re: Truly unfortunate names!
I once saw a website about an Indian man named Mr Phanni Tikkala.
The most amusing part was that he had a really very impressive moustache.
Nominative determinism?

"Wankhede" stadium named after a guy with that name. Indian prenounciation is Vank + a + Day.

That name doesn't get past the swear filter on some forums.

Re: Truly unfortunate names!
The word Wank is not that commonly used in India in the same derrogatory way it is in the some other English speaking countries. Accordingly most Indian commentators would prenounce it the way it should be whilst guys like Tony Grieg and Ian Chappell would prenounce it as Wank + eed whilst struggling to control their chuckling.

Interesting.
I take it W is pronounced differently in Sri Lanka as during the WI/SL ODI's the lankan commentator has been calling Chaminda Vaas as 'Waas'

Re: Truly unfortunate names!
Actually I don't think it is used at all. If you asked an Indian who has not been exposed to cultures from other prime English speaking nations the meaning of the word "Wanker" you might get different interpretations. An "idiot" is perhaps the most likely answer.taipan wrote:Josh Carney wrote:The word Wank is not that commonly used in India in the same derrogatory way it is in the some other English speaking countries.
