Australia's annual triangular series

Post by mynah on Sun 02 Mar 2008, 07:32

Just wondering... What percentage was won by the home team, how often did the Aussies fail to make the final, and hasn't anyone come up with a proposal to make it shorter? Is there any other competition in any sport with three finals, for example?

The NBA and MLB play best of seven finals.

Must be the second most pointless final/s ever...

(Most pointless ever was that at the South African interprovincial water polo tournament last year. The powers that be decided that, instead of the two teams that ended at the top of the log contesting the final, that this honour should fall to the team that ended second and the team that ended stone last. The winners of the final actually returned the trophy and their medals afterwards.)

The reason it goes on forever is politics and money ...Every State wants a certain number of JAMODIs because they bring in good $$$$ that the states use to fund the Pura Cup competition

Generally (up to a couple of years ago)
Melb gets 5
Sydney gets 5
Adelaide gets 3
Bribane gets 3
Perth gets 2
Hobart gets 1

Which is 18 games or 5 rounds of round robin and a best of 3 finals....With the Chappell Hadlee JAMODIs and Twenty 20 Internationals they have been able to reduce the number in the Tri Series to 12 games and best of 3 finals

I think we failed to make the finals three or four times.

This is the final tri-series too. Next season there'll be two five-match series.

Most of those would have been in 80s when it seemed we were always battling it out to be the team beaten in the finals by the Windies

From memory

The first ever tri series when the Windies and Poms beat us

I think Pakistan and the Windies in the mid 80's

The saffies and the snoozies when they rorted the bonus points to keep Australia out of the finals

Possibly one other

Didn't we also miss out around 1987?

We missed out in 1997 to the Windies and Stanis. I think they both played a few more games but it was the beginning of the end for Tubs and Heals in the ODI team.

Be a nice symmetry if Australia loses the last as well as the first.
