Is subi an acceptable term?

Post by The One on Mon 07 Jan 2008, 04:45

well seems to be a hot topic now. some idiots even claiming no one has objected to the term before. so lets have a poll and find out if anyone at all finds it offensive, and if so, how many

well i was trying to help out the dimwits who use it. maybe a simple graphical illustration would register better than a civilised conversation. i wish we had coloured graphs to keep up the interest

Re: Is subi an acceptable term?

Post by furriner on Mon 07 Jan 2008, 05:01

I was thinking of doing this, TO. Good man. Smile

I voted 'No'. I'm Indian.

There is a lot of hypocrisy - from Indian and Aus forummers- going around right now and this is an example.

Some forummers claim that Subi is not a racist term because they use it affectionately, even though it (a) lumps all nationalities under a catch all phrase and (b) Its usage is often, if not mostly, derived from contempt or derision ('subi cheats', 'subi sooks').

In that case 'Monkey' should not be racist, because Indians use it affectionately (and that is a fact, people) as well. But try telling that to these blokes and suddenly it is not the same thing.

The point remains: if Monkey is racist (which it is outside Indian culture, and in many countires) and Indians are being taken to task on that term (which I think they should be, if they use it), the reverse should be true. Why should we care if you use the term 'affectionately' (hypocritical in itself, see again 'subi cheats'). But the typical response one gets is 'get over it' or something like that. As I see it- amazing hypocrisy. Right now a man is being taken down for the alleged use of the term 'Monkey'. That's fine. But this.....

So the Indians decided to pick symonds, the black bloke in the team and the one who was vocal about india's 20/20 carry on and they thought well here's our favorite guy lets call him a monkey to show him how much we love and respect him.

Well how did we miss that....

imo its derogatory, especially in the manner that tac and his cronies use it.

bottom line should be if someone finds it offensive, dont call them that.

That is a fair statement pdy. here is the other side of the coin:

So the Indians some forummers here decided to pick symonds, the black bloke in the team and the one who was vocal about india's 20/20 carry on use the terms subi sook' and 'subi cheats' thought well here's our favorite guy lets call him a monkey to show him to show how affectionate the term is

No one denies that monkey is racist if you use it to a black man, or even outside of that. This thread is about the hypocrisy of using the term 'subi'.

So why the monkey chants at symonds?

Despite the acrimony between symonds and India pre series they decided to use monkey chants on him why exactly?

they just wanted to to do what exactly?

Furriner fair enough, if you guys find it offensive it shouldn't be used.

I personally haven't used it, like using the term aussies i think the context is the key.

which monkey chants are you referring to? the ones in india? i had said at that time that once it was pointed out to the public that calling a black man a monkey is extremely racist they should have put a stop to it. what happened in bombay was disgusting and a matter of shame. i went for the 20-20 match after the final odi and the crowd did not dare do any more monkey chants thankfully
