Of Tories and Marxists

Post by skully on Sun 06 May 2012, 13:33

Had a top notch arvo and evening talking cricket, politics, and many other various subjects with horrie yesterday in the city, over numerous beers. Great fun.

h, I think the answer to the question you asked me yesty i.e. who is the greatest West Indian cricket writer, may be C.L.R. James with his Beyond the Boundary. I haven't read the book but its described content sounds like something you'd appreciate. Very Happy

I trust you didn't fall asleep in front of that Indie film you were heading off to with your squeeze. Cool

was it the first time you met?

And yes, Beyond a Boundary is politics, colonialism, Caribbean history, cricket and race at its best. Highly recommend fwiw.

Thanx S for the fun yarning. I am safely back in the great city...tho plane was late...given I had to go the airport at 4.30 this am with 'all' my bags I successfuly avoided the 9.15 flic pm

...and yes CLR James is indeed the author...and beyond a boundary is a great book well worth reading as Jill notes above...

must say I am bit dusty here at the nursing home today...the staff have been critical, noting the odd grin and of course my bag is overflowing - the staff believe people of my advanced years should not have fun!!

Yup, Jilly, first time. horrie descibed himself well in a text message prior to the meeting, so I was able to spot him as he walked up the road towards the pub. It was a good fun 5 or so hours, with many laughs and the odd "sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree on that one". A most interesting chap. Very Happy

Cheers h, it was a top arvo. I hope Matron doesn't ride you too hard. Cool

Will have to borrow myself a copy of the CLR James tome. Sounds a worthy read. I think I have read the likes Mike Coward and Peter Roebuck referencing the book many times.

First time?

I thought you two went to an Ashes test together?

Anyway socialism is back in fashion in the fashion capital of the world.

And I find it outrageous that you have not read possibly the greatest cricket book ever written.

Though I do have to admit the book does romanticise a bit too much.

horrie was at the first Forum get-together at the MCG in 2006-07 (Warnie's 700th wicket Test) along with Zat, lardy, MB, Zimmy and Nath. I met up with Woody, Zat, lardy and MB on day 1 of the woeful 5th Ashes Test in 2010-11.

I will look to address this oversight. Cool
