Sehwag.

Post by Batman on Thu 26 Jan 2012, 18:23

Enough has been said and written about this guy so a brief synopsis of what he is/was all these years - Yeah he is a destroyer of attacks like Richards, he was the best for opener going for a while, he was the batsmen bowlers feared the most and how he converted most 100s into really big 150+ ones. About how among his many exciting bigs ones, only 4 have come outside the sub-continent.

It used to be said that, thats the way Sehwag played. He would either score a huge one in double quick time making it easy for our great middle order and set up wins or go out for nothing. But seriously guys is that how it should still be with a senior player and a veteran of 100 tests? With age comes slowing reflexes, but also a greater understanding of one's game and a maturity that allows for greater achievements. While great batsmen take from their mistakes, learn to curb their aggressive streaks of early years and mould their game on maturity aligned to team's cause and personal improvement, sadly Sehwag has not reached that point at all. But he is slowly crossing the age barrier without changing his game. After 100 tests people should no longer be shrugging the shoulders and saying,"Thats Sehwag. Thats how he plays".

He has still not learnt to play for team cause and play with maturity. After a 100 tests he still undervalues his role and fails to realize what he needs to do at top to help lay a solid ground for the team and still plays like a 16 year old teenager high on testosterone. As age catches up he will find it difficult to get away with that daring play. Instead of developing new tricks if grafting in his game, he is still playing hit and miss after 100 tests and looking more ugly and crappy as he grows older. In fact I suspect it has already started for him where more and more good bowlers now sort him out as the lack of technique and application hinder him, accustomed to his one dimensional style of play. Slower reflexes will only make it worse soon. In fact I think going by the 8 overseas test so far it has already started for him.

When will this man learn? At this stage I am afraid the answer is never. If a man fails to learn in 10 years of his peak and after 100 tests when most people retire after such a career, the answer is never. And so it will only get much worse.

People are asking serious questions of the seniors who anyway didn't have more time left than a year or 2 at most. But no one miss asking the more prudent question of the younger veterans who are also now an equal liability. People like Sehwag. The time has come to dump him along with the aged seniors and invest in a younger moire solid batsmen who can mould his game for team interest. Sehwag still has age on his side., But I am not convinced he is India's requirement for long term future anymore. His liabilities overseas will increase and his achievements at flat beds at home will hinder us in blooding good openers who can serves us well everywhere and for a longer time. Just like we learnt to look beyond Yuvraj in middle order for long term future, we need to look beyond the likes of Sehwag and Gambhir as well. Will the selectors show some balls and courage and for a change some vision?

Guys who should no longer be a part of any future India test team -

Shitwag.
Ghoti [he should retire to playing marbles in Delhi's backstreets with kids].
Wall-opped.
Lax.
>Lara [If he gets his 100 in ODIs, fine. But it should be his last series too]
Dhoti.

Better we have kids getting raped, but at least learning and buidling than people who are past their shelf life, with due respect to all their past glory.

The scary part is that most cricket fans know which players need to go [3 Legends]and be benched for a long time, which deserve to be kicked in their backsides [Both FTB openers and Dhoni]. The irony is that they won't be punished. I won't be surprised if the legends get a home series to go out on a high. The other letdowns have been already chosen for the Pajama fest. IPL is around and while these guys have hurt Indian cricket badly and have caused a drop in interest, yet the BCCI won't punish them because they won't risk IPL being shown it's true place by fans and won't risk team owners ire. How valuable can players be if they have been dumped from national team for being pathetic. So the arseholes will be rewarded with fat slots in IPL. This is the reason why BCCI has not done an honest review of our debacles this season. An honest assessment would have forced harsh decisions and this would have toppled the IPL apple cart heavily.

BCCI[ICC] won't allow it.

Surely Sharma has to go, too. Like Brett Lee, he has the physical requisites, but he seems incapable of learning. He bowls a very good ball every other over, and a lot of filth. He cannot sustain pressure. Decent players see off his good balls and thrash his filth. He's a liability in the field, to boot ... and that's what he needs to get.

Currently we have at least 7 bad fielders in a team of 11 - all slow and wobbly and butterfingered who allowed the likes of Hussey and Ponting easy singles and helped them boost their confidence. You can't win with that many crap fielders. Maybe next test we can field them all on wheelchairs. I am sure BCCI can get ICC to allow for change in rules.
