2012 Oscars

Post by Allan D on Tue Jan 24, 2012 3:33 am

Looks like The Artist and Hugo are set to clean up the awards - the latter in the technical sections. A couple of interesting footnotes - Christopher Plummer, at the age of 82, gets his second Oscar nom following on from his portrayal of Tolstoy in The Last Station in 2009. Just like buses it appears, you wait forever then two come at once. If Meryl Streep gets the award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady - though often nominated she hasn't won since 1983 for Sophie's Choice - it will be the second Best Acting Award for the portrayal of a British PM since George Arliss in Disraeli in 1930. It will also follow on from Colin Firth's win for his portrayal of George VI in The King's Speech last year. No portrayal of a US President has won the award - the only nomination being for Raymond Massey in Abe Lincoln in Illinois in 1940.

I meant an actor playing a President rather than an actor who became one but, sadly, The Gipper never came close to an Oscar nod:

although the film in which he gave arguably his finest performance, Kings Row, was nominated for Best Picture in 1943 however Mrs Miniver took the little man home.

Actually meant he deserved one for his 8 year portrayal.

He got quite good reviews for that by some including the present incumbent:

But perhaps even more important than any single accomplishment was the sense of confidence and optimism President Reagan never failed to communicate to the American people. It was a spirit that transcended the most heated political arguments, and one that called each of us to believe that tomorrow will be better than today. At a time when our nation was going through an extremely difficult period, with economic hardship at home and very real threats beyond our borders, it was this positive outlook, this sense of pride, that the American people needed more than anything.

When the future looked darkest and the way ahead seemed uncertain, President Reagan understood both the hardships we faced and the hopes we held for the future. He understood that it is always "Morning in America." That was his gift, and we remain forever grateful.

Reagan saw that 'we are all patriots' by Barack Obama

Another oddity is the nomination of Kenneth Branagh for his portrayal of a previous Oscar winner, Laurence Olivier (Hamlet, 1948) in My Week with Marilyn. Also both of them have been previously nominated (although neither won) for the same role - Wm. Shakespeare's Henry V (Olivier, 1946, Branagh 1989).

The only portrayal of an actor by an actor to have won an Oscar was Ronald Colman who played the fictional Anthony John, who murders his wife after becoming obsessed by the role of Othello, in the 1947 A Double Life although Gloria Swanson was nominated for her depiction of Norma Desmonde in Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard and Barbra Streisand won for her portrayal of the real-life Fanny Brice in the 1968 Funny Girl.

Streep should definitely win the best actress award. Her portrayal of Thatcher was brilliant.

The biopic that was overlooked was The Devil's Double featuring Dominic Cooper's bravura performance not only as Uday Hussein but also as his body double, Latif Yahia. If any actor deserves an award he does.

Agree but evidently the critics don't rate the film much which might go against her. The lead actress from The Help is also strongly tipped.

She's nothing like the real Thatcher, she made her look marginally human.

Yes and many of the critics have said as much, they soft pedalled around the contentious issues during her reign. I felt too much emphasis was placed on the losing of her marbles.
