Re: The 2012 Trivia Thread

Are there any records kept on the lowest score after electing to bat or most wickets to fall on the first day after the toss winner inserted themselves?

Gave this list yesterday on the match thread:

Sides Dismissed For Less Than 100 After Winning Toss and Electing to Bat

Only 3 sides have won after such a start - England on 2 occasions against South Africa in 1899 and 1907 and Australia who defeated England in "Spofforth's Match" at The Oval in August 1882.

The record number of wickets to fall on the first day after a side has won the toss and elected to bat is 22 in this match:

Eng. v. Aus., The Oval, 11-12 Aug. 1890

Although the 16 wickets which fell yesterday was probably a record for the England v. Pakistan series for the 1st day it is not the overall record for a single day in Tests between these two sides which is 15 June 1954 in the 1st Test at Lord's (the inaugural Test between these two countries) when 19 wickets fell as Pakistan went from 53-1 in their 1st innings to 87 all out, England declared on 117-9 and Pakistan ended the match on 121-3. Although this was the 5th scheduled day's play the first 3 had been completely washed out.

Here's one for the S&Ders.

England lost 6 wickets in overtaking Pakistan's meagre 1st innings 99 in the current Test in Dubai. There have been 4 instances of a team losing more wickets to overtake a 1st innings total of these than 100. Can you name them? For the bonus jaffer, also name the other 3 instances of team losing 6 wickets prior to grabbing a lead.

Team losing 6 or more wickets to overtake a 1st innings total of less than 100 (score at loss of last wkt shown prior to lead being taken):

Getting to be a bit of an obsession with me, I know, but that match at The Oval in 1882 where your great-grandad chewed his umbrella - English 6th wicket fell on 63 equalling Ozzie 1st innings score.

Back to the 2nd group although almost in the first - Saffies' inaugural Test at Port Elizabeth in 1889 with Sir C.Aubrey in charge of the visitors. Saffies all out for 84 visitors were 77-6 which became 85-7.
