Month of Jabberwocky

Post by skully on Fri 30 Dec 2011, 13:46

What? It's a good word, for those who don't mind burbling about this place.

Looks like 8,000 is around the mar we can expect althought there are quite a few Tests on in the month.

Jabberwocky is one of my two favourite poems in the English language. And the Jabberwock itself also scared me greatly as a little kid.

Twas brillig and the slithey toves
Did gyre and gymble in the wabe...

Juanuary. In honour of someone called Juan.

Someone else can make up the tenuous connection.

The jabberwocky ate a lad called Juan, who had strayed into the tulgey wood. Never enough gyring and gimbling in this place, for mine.

Leo McKern (Rumpole) was fond of quoting "And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

I'm liking Jabberwocky, you can't have too much nonsense.

I liked the Python (film) version of Jabberwocky, which I think of as somewhat of a lost treasure. It's filth, grime and putrescence from beginning to end (a bit like Flaming Bails).

'Cor, she must have really loved you' gushes one mud-caked peasant to another; the recipient of a mouldy and half eaten potato as a gift from his true love.

It was a Terry Gilliam film rather than a Python film, lardy. Fore runner of The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen etc. I liked the recent The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

I'm sure I knew a chap called Juan about ten years ago. I think he was OK.

That's about all I can add.

I just remembered I also love Time Bandits, it's got dwarves and for some reason it's not been on this Christmas.
