Just looking at the three currently at the top of the Christchurch earthquake tread:
Want monster drives?
Hotels Christchurch
Apartments Christchurch - short-term apartments in Christchurch

There's some widget that caches your recent searches on Google (or whatever SE) and then puts the ads on that banner.

Mynah, those are Google Ads which appear automatically based on the content of the page. The web admin cannot choose the exact ads to appear.

So we're individually targetted, then? Wonder what made them put the gay military men dating site on my screen... Perhaps they know something about the military base near my home?

You do.
In fact you've told us what you were probably searching for on google.
I know spangs and phil have said this already. But it was worth saying the third time.

Explains why all of the ads i'm seeing are for Bangladeshi midget porn.

My ads, for this thread are:
La Manga Club Apartments
World Trip - Christchurch
Free Website For Business
I haven't searched for any of these things ever. I suspect the keywords in each individual thread are what trigger the ads. Or something like that - I mean, it's shady old business, "tailored" advertising. Who knows exactly how it comes about...?

I'm still wondering about the gay military men dating site advertising "meet the 1000s of gay military men in your area". Was it the "General Ghaddafi morphing into Queen Elizabeth, frumpy dresses and all" search I did? The results of the shooting and AIDS tests on our soldiers that suggest our army is the only one in the world that would kill more people by sleeping with the enemy than by engaging in armed combat with them?

To be fair to Mynah, I think the opening question was a case of rhetorical incredulity, rather than the naive enquiry one or two seem to have answered. ~ Possibly equally ironically, but I'm not so sure.
Come on spang, phil, aditya ... this Mynah girl is brighter than a dull old question.

Re: Who picks the ads for this forum?!
No offence taken. Those ads just reminded me of the time when I was working at a daily newspaper. The start of a municipal campaign to promote public transport very unfortunatelycoincided with a terrible bus accident in which more than 30 kids from a school in the city were killed. On that day, readers were confronted by a front page that was devoted entirely to this tragedy - apart from a quarter-page ad bearing the slogan in fat red letters:
ENJOY PEACE OF MIND.
TAKE A BUS.
TAKE A BUS.
