Chris Woakes called up for the ODI's/T20's

Post by JKLever on Fri 10 Dec 2010, 14:16

RaviBop dropped, strange one that imo.

England squad: Andrew Strauss (Middlesex) - (ODI Captain, ODI squad only), Paul Collingwood (Durham) - (T20 Captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Tim Bresnan, (Yorkshire), Steven Davies (Surrey), Eoin Morgan (Middlesex), Craig Kieswetter (Somerset) - (T20 squad only), Kevin Pietersen (Surrey), Ajmal Shahzad (Yorkshire), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire), James Tredwell (Kent), Chris Tremlett (Surrey), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Luke Wright (Sussex), Michael Yardy (Sussex).

Tredwell? FFS

Be interesting to see how Woakes goes. Got talent but maybe needs a yard at this level or batsmen will murder him off the front foot. Could go ok under lights in the D/N

I guess Woakes and Bresnan will be competing for one world cup spot.

Tredwell FFS, Luke Wright FFS. And no Bopara. Hmm. I suspect England are a little fed up of his ultra laid back, casual attitude. Did England want him to tour with the Performance Squad but he chose to play in South Africa instead? Or was it agreed by both parties that playing in South Africa was the right option?

Tredwell's been going well with the EPP out there in Oz, so I guess he was always going to be picked to mix the drinks. Swann and Yardy have got a good thing going - I don't see England tinkering with that for a while.

Woakes is worth a look at. He's gone well for the EPP. Spent last winter with Stuey Meaker in Florida at a fast bowling fitness camp, supposedly putting on some heat. Let's see how he's shaping up.

He's a talented young swing bowler. If - if - he's clocking up at around Jimmy Anderson's pace, then he's going to be a handy player to have in reserve. If he's still a bit Jon Lewis-like, at least we'll know and he can bugger off back to the county stiffs and develop some more. He's only 21: time is on his side. Broad put on a yard of pace just through the natural process of maturing a bit (physically only).

And he can bat. Already has a couple of first class hundreds.

Can bat too, probably more of a hitter at this stage though. Couple of FC 130's I think.

Meh, typed at the same time. Made a cuppa, got the new post notification and thought fark it.

He's a promising cricketer, worried he may be a bit Hoggard in ODI's, He was around the 80mph mark in the U19's and 82mph in county cricket when I first saw him but in a game last year he was 85-6mph but then the next game back to 82.

If he holds steady at the 85/86 mph mark and continues to keep up the control and skill that he previously had, he should be a good player indeed.

He's 6' 2", so shouldn't be as much fodder as Roundarm Hoggard if it doesn't swing in ODIs.

But we all know that after a few months with England he'll be banging the ball in halfway down every second delivery.

Just as well England's doing well in the Tests atm. Naming the short-form squad in the middle of a Test series has seen friction in the ranks of some teams before.

Apart from the non-selection of Bopara, there are no real surprises - so there isn't much for the players to get angsty about. I think Yardy's bowling will be found out in the WC and I would have had another look at Rashid.

They think Bopara is too casual and they're terrified of Rashid getting hammered.

I think England are ignoring a massive talent in Rashid.

They're ignoring Bopara's massive talent as well.
