Sorry... that 4-6 included Tassie actually. NT (0-1), SA (3), Vic (0) and Tas (1-2) adds up to 4-6.

The Vic thing I'm basing on a) Galaxy, b) Labor leaks agreeing with Galaxy. Labor's internal poll leaks are usually accurate, as far as they go.

They are saying they could win up to 20 seats in NSW and Queensland though, which is why I wrote out the list above. Seems to me that is a tad ambitious.

The Leichhardt thing is (I believe) from a poll of 310 folk in the Cairns Post which had the Coalition leading 47-36 on primaries. No idea how good the process was.

Don't forget people like a change after long periods in office and Howard and Costello would give them more of the same. Both are currently unpopular and Rudd has had a good campaign and comes across better than any Labor leader since Keating.

John Howard's expression on the 7:30 report shows that he knows it's over.

He was very relaxed, as though he was resigned to his fate.

He still argued his case and refused to concede defeat, but you could tell he knew the jig was up.

Dignified under pressure I thought.

Watching that (maybe) 'farewell' interview, I have to admit to mixed feelings. I'm glad the 'ugly' political tactics he's used may be on the way out, but in and out of government he's done more good than harm in public life (in policy terms), and there can be little higher praise than that for a politician.

Channel 9 had a show tonight about the Harold Holt disappearance. They pointed out that it would be much like John Howard disappearing while on his morning walk. They also went out of their way to show that Harold Holt was a mad rooting machine but I missed the comparison with LJH cos I had to go into the kitchen to get my dinner out of the oven.

Okay. I'm going to take my old sunhat into the lounge room on Saturday evening, and if Labor wins Dawson I'm going to start chewing. I think they're going troppo down at Labor HQ.
