Same series - 6th test: 351 added by Gooch and Gower for the second wicket.

I was well and truly gawn by the 6th Test and tried to tell myself I didn't care (yeah right). But at least with that partnership was by two players (GG and DG) of true class. But Tim Robinson FFS. That just highlighted how sh!te we were.

Good comment about Gower skully. If you are going to die, you may as well die watching an artist at work.

the contrast in the styles of gooch and gower was something to behold, akin only to TGM and magoo

Maybe so, but Gooch's 153* against the WI at Leeds is still one of the greatest knocks i've ever seen.

As much as I loved Gower too ( and it was criminal he wasn't still playing test cricket in the mid 90's) I doubt he was capable of that.

Other than when he dropped himself rather than face Alderman in 1989.

It wasn't just Alderman though.

As an Essex member I remember he was having a shocking year in all cricket that year. I'm pretty sure he was going through marriage difficulties at that time too.

And he was probably a bit down about losing his - at the time - un-advanced hair and all.

David Gower played cricket with a brush instead of a bat.

I remember seeing Gooch in the mid 1980s coming in to bat in a county match with about 20 minutes left in the days play. He finished at about 45 not out of which probably 40 were from boundaries. He basically hit every ball where he wanted.

I remember cursing that Essex had not had two hours to bat that evening. I think he could have scored 200 in a session. On his best form he was one of the greatest batsmen ever to grace the game.
